Balyea helps Mariners break 14-game losing streak

FITCHBURG, Mass. – Jeremy Balyea threw a 77-yard touchdown pass to Curtis Brown midway through the fourth quarter as Maine Maritime snapped a 14-game losing streak Saturday with a 27-23 win over Fitchburg State.

Balyea completed just 3 of 6 passes, but two were for touchdowns to Brown. Balyea also ran for a score.

Fitchburg State trailed 20-9 after Balyea’s 1-yard touchdown run with 5:39 left in the third quarter. But a 2-yard scoring run by Carld Auguste and a 19-yard scoring pass from Jon Quinn to Brian Spencer put Fitchburg ahead 23-20 with 13:45 left.

Maine Maritime took the lead back on Balyea’s 77-yard pass to Brown with 7:38 left in the game.

Quinn completed 22 of 43 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns for Fitchburg. Spencer caught 12 passes for 109 yards.

Amherst 14, Colby 3

At Waterville, Amherst intercepted five passes and scored twice on short runs to defeat the White Mules.

Amherst rushed for 200 yards during the game, led by Kevin Kennard’s 99 yards on 24 carries, which included a 5-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter that opened up the game’s scoring. Jeff Browne completed seven of 21 passes for 75 yards.

But it was Amherst’s five interceptions by five different players that helped overcome Colby’s passing attack of 213 yards. For the game, Colby outgained Amherst 318 yards to 275 yards.

Bowdoin 23, Hamilton 14

At Brunswick, Mike Taylor and Kevin Bougie rushed for a combined 179 yards Saturday to lead Bowdoin to its first victory in 16 games.

The Polar Bears scored on their first possession of the game and never looked back in snapping a losing streak that dated back to 1999.

Taylor rushed for 91 yards, while Bougie ran for another 88 yards to lead Bowdoin’s attack. The defense intercepted four passes, with Sean Starke returning one for a 63-yard touchdown with just over four minutes to go to clinch the victory.

Chris Weeden led Hamilton with 178 rushing yards on 39 carries.

Wesleyan 42, Bates 16

At Middletown, Conn., Young Douglas scored three touchdowns on short runs Saturday as Wesleyan beat Bates.

Brennan Carney threw for 300 yards and two touchdowns, and George Thompson caught eight passes for 190 yards and both touchdowns.

Sean Atkins had 270 yards rushing and two touchdowns for Bates.

Atkins ran the ball 36 times on the day, but was held to 48 yards on 13 carries in the second half. His effort was the second highest rushing figure for an NCAA Division III player this season.

Douglas scored the first two touchdowns for Wesleyan (3-1) from the two-yard line. Thompson scored the first of his two touchdowns on a 17-yard reception after a 39-yard field goal by Bates’ Nat Carr.
