Medway couple hurt in car crash Vehicle rear-ended by tractor-trailer

EAST MILLINOCKET – A Medway couple was hospitalized Tuesday afternoon after a tractor-trailer rear-ended their vehicle, pushing it up on a sidewalk and into the wall of a Main Street store.

Police Sgt. Kevin Giberson said Patrick and Lorraine Federico, both 72, of Medway, were transported by an East Millinocket ambulance to Millinocket Regional Hospital as the result of the 3:30 p.m. accident.

An MRH spokesman said the couple were in stable condition. Patrick Federico was treated and expected to be released at press time. Medical personnel were still evaluating Lorraine Federico’s condition, the spokeswoman said.

Giberson said Lorraine Federico, the driver of a 1999 Buick Park Avenue, was attempting to turn into a parking spot in front of Kip’s Market on Main Street when her car was struck in the rear by a tractor-trailer.

He said the impact pushed Federico’s car up over the curb, onto the sidewalk and into the front wall of the building, which caused a large section of a plate-glass window to break. The sergeant said the Federicos both were wearing their seat belts.

Giberson said Dale Hosford Jr., 22, of Island Falls, the driver of the tractor-trailer, escaped without injury. Hosford owns P. Ridge Trucking of Island Falls.

“It was lucky he was unloaded because injuries and damages could have been a lot more severe,” said Giberson.

Reserve Officer Jason Ingalls directed traffic, which slowed to a single lane for between 30 and 45 minutes along busy Main Street.

Giberson estimated damage to the car and the store could approach $15,000.
