MACHIAS – The first Washington County walk for the Down East Aids Network raised more than $3,100, according to the Maine Blackfly Breeders Association.

MBBA walkers raised $2,034 of that total, according to the organization.

All the money raised during the Oct. 7 walk will stay in Washington County, where the Down East AIDS Network is opening an office in Machias.

The Water Street office will provide counseling, AIDS education and support for Washington County residents living with AIDS.

MBBA members have participated in the network’s Ellsworth walkathon for the past six years.

“AIDS education is the first step in prevention and we hope that people will stop by the new office when it opens and take advantage of what they have to offer,” said MBBA in a news release.
