As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and an individual diagnosed with a major mental illness, I take great offense at the NBC Dateline segment of Oct. 14 on protecting the airline pilots from terrorists or other people who may attempt to take control of the cockpits. The reporter’s use of the term “mental cases” was insensitive, derogatory, and damaging as it serves to perpetuate the stigma associated with mental illness.

I encourage members of our society, particularly those whose positions afford them great influence, to pay close attention to the power and impact of the words we choose.
