Kelly goal lifts Thomas by Owls UMaine, UM-Farmington post wins

WATERVILLE – Rick Kelly scored on a scramble in front of the net with 6:02 left in the second overtime Sunday as Thomas eked out a 3-2 men’s soccer victory over the University of Maine-Presque Isle.

Thomas freshman Chris Inzerillo converted a Ben Wheeler feed with 4:32 left in regulation to force overtime. C.J. McKenna scored a goal for the 6-8-0 Terriers. Ryan Conley made six saves on eight shots.

Matt Bouchard and Mike Lane netted goals and Aarron Miller had an assist for the 2-6-0 Owls. Jon Cole made six saves on nine shots.

Maine 1, Vermont 0 (OT)

At Orono Sunday, Greg Bajek headed in a goal with 4:32 remaining in the first overtime as Maine tipped Vermont and snapped an eight-game losing streak.

Rob Dow and Keith Moore were credited with assists. Josh Sjostrom turned back seven of 20 shots for the 2-10-0 Black Bears.

For the 2-7-1 Catamounts, David Sullivan had one save on nine shots.

UM-Farmington 2, UMFK 0

At Fort Kent Sunday, a Jeff Malenfant pass set up Dave Sithole’s breakaway goal with 4:36 remaining as the Beavers broke a scoreless tie and earned the win.

Jeff Beck scored an unassisted goal with five seconds left for UMaine-Farmington (11-3 overall, 5-0 in Maine Athletic Conference play). Mike Hauser notched the shutout, making one save.

Zach Cote posted three saves for the Bengals (7-6-1, 5-3-0)

UM-Farmington 4, UMPI 0

At Farmington Saturday, Jeff Meinhart booted two goals as UM-Farmington shut out UM-Presque Isle.

Dave Sithole and Patrick Dugos contributed goals while Jeff Beck, Adam Lambert, Brian Mawhinney and Justin Genschel registered assists for the 10-3 Beavers. Mike Hauser and Ryan Hersey combined to make eight saves.

Jon Cole and Tim Dolley recorded seven saves for the 5-7 Owls.

St. Joseph’s 3, Husson 0

At Standish Sunday, Michael Herrick scored two goals as the Monks downed Husson of Bangor.

Michael Erickson contributed a goal and Matt Grauwiler and Chris Hughes distributed assists for 8-7-0 St. Joseph’s. Nick Wallace and Jeff Yaeger combined to make six saves on six shots.

Cliff Urquhart stopped nine of 16 shots for the Braves.

Women’s soccer

UM-Farmington 2, UMPI 0

At Farmington Saturday, Megan Woodcock tallied a goal and an assist as UM-Farmington blanked UM-Presque Isle.

Richelle Dube headed in a pass from Woodcock for the Beavers. Alyson Pontbriand made eight saves for 12-3 UM-Farmington.

For the 6-7 Owls, Noreen Marcino notched nine saves.

UM-Farmington 8, UMFK 0

At Farmington Sunday, Steph Hillar scored four goals as UMaine-Farmington rolled to victory.

Shannon Mailhot netted two goals, Megan Woodcock registered a goal and an assist and Erin Findland scored a goal for the 13-3 Beavers. Alyson Pontbriand and Dawn Robertson combined for one save.

Joy Gervais garnered 15 saves for UMaine-Fort Kent.

St. Joseph’s 2, Husson 1

Tiffany Merrill and Angela Valesiani each scored a goal to lead the St. Joseph’s College Monks of Standish past Husson 2-1 Sunday in Bangor.

Marissa Regan made 11 saves on 12 shots for the 8-7 Monks.

Katy Calligan scored unassisted for the 9-6 Braves. Meg Taylor stopped 11 of 13 shots.

Maine 1, Vermont 0

At Burlington, Vt., Sunday, Jen Buckley headed in a corner kick from Allison Kelly at the 6:10 mark of the first half as Maine won.

Naomi Welsh earned the shutout with five saves on 10 shots for the 6-4-3 Black Bears. For 5-8-1 Vermont, Brooke Fairbanks and Katie Duffy combined for six saves on 12 shots.

Bowdoin beats Bates

Emily Rizza notched her seventh shutout of the season with five saves on five shots Sunday as the visiting Bowdoin Polar Bears knocked off Bates in the NESCAC first round tournament game in Lewiston Sunday.

Rachael Gordon, Michal Shapiro and Jill Falwell scored for the fourth-seeded Polar Bears (11-3-1).

Kim Martell and Lynn Antinarelli combined to make nine saves on 22 shots for the 10-4-1 Bobcats.

Unity 2, Bunker Hill 0

At Unity Sunday, Kyla Laplante and Rebecca Romanowski booted a goal each as the Rams topped Bunker Hill Community College of Charlestown, Mass., and earned the Yankee Conference crown.

Kara White and Tasha Benoit contributed assists for 8-4-1 Unity. Kristen Hewitt made eight saves on 10 shots.

For 6-8 Bunker Hill, Brooke Knott turned back 17 of 21 shots.

Field hockey

Northeastern 5, Maine 1

At Boston Saturday, the Huskies tallied four unanswered second-half goals to beat the Black Bears.

Aleisha Bemis, Liane Dixon, Mari Creatini, Fior Arrindell and Sarah Broderick scored one goal apiece for 13-4 Northeastern, which clinched first place in America East at 8-0. Kathleen Madaus made four saves for the Huskies.

Rebecca Ouellet tipped in a Jen Johnstone shot to put UMaine (8-6 overall, 5-3 AE) ahead in the first half. Jaye Lance made five saves for UMaine.

Amherst 2, Colby 1

At Brunswick Sunday, Marcy Busch scored with 6:23 left in the first half to lift Amherst (Mass.) to a NESCAC quarterfinal victory.

Robin Ackerman also scored for Amherst. Beth Sensing made four saves for the 12-3 Lord Jeffs.

For the 8-7 White Mules, Marcia Ingraham scored off a scramble in front of the net. Carrie Torrisi was credited with 10 saves.

Bowdoin 3, Colby 1

At Waterville Saturday, Gillian McDonald made seven saves to lead Bowdoin past Colby.

Marissa O’Neil, Leah McClure and Alison Scaduto each scored goals for the 12-2 Polar Bears.

For 8-6 Colby, Michaelyn Bartolotti scored on a Marcia Ingraham assist. Carrie Torrisi made 10 saves on 13 shots.

Women’s hockey

Maine 5, Colgate 1

At Hamilton, N.Y., Sunday, Meagan Aarts scored two goals to spark Maine to a five-goal third period and the victory.

LeeAnne Irwin, Tracy Caridade and Nicole Munro added goals, while Cheryl White and Kelly Nelson had two assists each for the 2-0 Black Bears. Amanda Cronin tallied 15 saves on 16 shots.

For 0-2 Colgate, Amanda Barre scored unassisted. Lindsay Bourne turned back 30 of 35 shots.

Maine 6, Colgate 2

At Hamilton, N.Y., Saturday, first-period goals by Meagan Aarts, Andrea Steranko and Tristan Desmet sent the Bears on their way to a season-opening win.

Karen Droog scored two goals and Nicole Munro added one. Desmet, LeeAnne Irwin and Laura Maddin had two assists apiece and Dawn Froats made 23 saves.

Avery McGlenn and Cheryl Setchell scored for Colgate and Jen Burtraw turned aside 20 shots.

Volleyball

UMaine edges Hartford

At West Hartford, Conn., Leah Voss pounded out 17 kills and scooped up 23 digs to power Maine by the University of Hartford 25-30, 30-28, 30-27, 25-30, 15-10 on Sunday.

Claire Poliquin contributed 20 kills, Adrienne Poplawski logged 16 kills and 11 digs and Cheryl Elliott chipped in with 56 assists as the Black Bears moved to 10-9.

For the 5-12 Hawks, Stephanie Volkers garnered 21 kills and 12 digs while Kelly McEathron had 17 kills and 15 digs.

Maine defeats Stony Brook

At Stony Brook, N.Y., the Black Bears withstood a furious rally by the Seawolves to earn a 30-18, 33-31, 27-30, 18-30, 15-12 victory Saturday.

Leah Voss paced UMaine (9-9, 3-3 AE) hitting .256 with 19 kills and a match-high 18 digs.

Cheryl Elliott registered 51 assists and 10 digs.

Valerie Maloy led Stony Brook with 18 kills, 10 digs and six aces.
