BOSTON – A federal agency has proposed that Bath Iron Works be fined more than $200,000 for dozens of alleged federal workplace safety violations.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued citations to BIW alleging that its workers have been exposed to a variety of “crushing, impalement, electrical, laceration, amputation and other hazards.”
The citations followed a six-month onsite investigation that was prompted by complaints from shipyard workers. The investigation was completed Sept. 25. “This case clearly illustrates the need for employers to carefully monitor their workplaces and identify potential safety or health hazards,” said Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao. “Thorough safety audits are vital and effective tools to ensure safe and healthful workplaces.”
A BIW spokesman was not immediately available for comment. But OSHA spokesman Ted Fitzgerald said the shipyard has filed notice that it will contest the charges.
Fourteen of the citations were issued for alleged repeat safety violations, which are issued when an employer has previously been cited by OSHA for a substantially similar violation. OSHA has proposed fines of $165,000 for those citations.
Eighteen citations are for “serious violations,” and carry a total of $36,775 in proposed fines.
