ORONO – The University of New Hampshire’s Wildcats ruined the home opener for the Maine women with a 3-1 victory over the Black Bears Friday night at Alfond Arena.

Goals by Allison Edgar and Kristen Thomas in the first and second periods, respectively, gave the ‘Cats a 2-0 lead. Randi MacMaster restored the two-goal lead when she scored with 9:29 left in the game. Jen Huggon made 17 saves on 18 shots for the 2-1 Wildcats.

For the 2-1 Bears, senior LeeAnne Irwin scored off assists from Meagan Aarts and Naomi Smethurst 17 minutes into the second period. Dawn Froats saved 39 of the 42 shots she faced in goal.

The Black Bears are still looking for their first-ever win over UNH, which they will face again at Alfond Saturday afternoon.

Men’s Soccer

Delaware 6, Maine 0

At Newark, Del., Pat Werner scored two goals while Don Keane Mike Honeyse each had a goal and an assist to lead the Delaware Blue Hens to the shutout.

Kyle Shilcock-Elliott and Adam Flanigan each scored a goal for the Hens. Kyle Haynes and Morgan Funsten combined to make two saves on two shots.

For the 2-11 Bears, Josh Sidstrom and Adam Maciaszczyk combined for five saves on 23 shots.

UM-Machias 6, MMA 0

At Castine, Brett Howarth scored four goals to power the Clippers past the Mariners.

Tim Spry and Neil Redmon scored a goal each for 7-7 UMaine-Machias, while Tatienda Chirusa notched three assists. Andrew Swift made three saves on 10 shots.

Dan Loebel and Chad Flagg combined to make three saves on 16 shots for 2-12 Maine Maritime Academy.

Field Hockey

Worcester State 1, USM 0

At Plymouth, N.H., Worcester State’s Christen Watt scored what turned out to be the game winning goal with 29:13 remaining in the first half.

Kristen Cordeira assisted on the game winning goal for 15-6 Worcester State. The loss marked the fourth consecutive year that Southern Maine lost in the semis.

Worcester State’s Alisha Bates was perfect in goal, stopping all 12 Southern Maine shot attempts in the Little East Tournament semifinal game. Jessie Superchi stopped one of three shots for 12-8 Southern Maine.
