Albert powers Skowhegan

SKOWHEGAN – Robin Albert scored on a penalty stroke with 1:50 to go in the second overtime as top-seeded Skowhegan tipped No. 2 Messalonskee of Oakland 1-0 Saturday in the Eastern Maine Class A field hockey championship game.

The Indians improved to 15-2 and avenged a loss they suffered to Messalonskee in last year’s Eastern Maine final. Messalonskee finished 13-4.

Skowhegan outshot Messalonskee 20-14. Meghan Gove earned the shutout for the Indians while Clarice Pepper handled the goaltending chores for Messalonskee.

Mount Ararat 3, Waterville 1

At Waterville, Mount Ararat of Topsham scored two second-half goals and upended the defending state champs in a battle of divisional top seeds.

Chris Lyons scored two goals and Shane Coffin added another for the 17-0-1 Eagles.

John Tuthill scored the goal for 15-2-1 Waterville, which tied Mount Ararat earlier in the year.
