Husson annexes MAC crown

FARMINGTON – Jen Commeau scored with 28 seconds remaining in the game to give Husson a 3-2 win over the University of Maine at Farmington in the Maine Athletic Conference field hockey championship game.

The Braves came back from a 2-0 halftime deficit. Amanda Brown scored on a penalty shot with 17:48 left in the game for the 9-4 Braves and Nicole Palmer tallied with 12:03 left.

Dorice Reitchel, with an assist from Katie Bernier, opened the scoring for 9-5 UMF, and Erica Gunderson scored the second with an assist from Reitchel.

Maine wins two

The University of Maine earned two road wins over the weekend, topping New Hampshire 4-3 on Saturday and dropping Providence 3-1 on Sunday.

On Saturday, Jen Johnstone, Morgan Brady, Karly Bundy and Jana Ouellette scored the goals for Maine, which improves to 9-7 overall and 6-3 in America East play. Karyn Magno and Kristy Ferran notched assists while Jaye Lance made one save on seven UNH shots.

Tami Street scored a goal and assisted on another for the 7-12 (3-6) Wildcats. Jen Stamp and Jen Harrison added goals. Christine Buckley made 10 saves on 19 shots.

On Sunday, Magno scored twice in the second half to lift the Black Bears over the Friars.

Rebecca Ouellet opened the scoring for 10-7 Maine, and Brady had the game’s only assist, on Magno’s second goal. Lance made six saves on 24 shots.

Meaghan Moran also made six stops on 13 shots for 11-6 Providence.

Men’s soccer

Towson 7, Maine 1

At Towson, Md., Todd Lauber and Alfonso DeMares each scored twice Sunday to pace the 11-3-1 Tigers.

Randy Tolson and Kevin Corradini added a goal and two assists each, and Jesse Carrington also scored. Steve Fell had two assists. Goalkeeper Andy Hicks made four saves on six shots.

Greg Bajek tallied the lone goal for 2-12 Maine, and Matt Young had the assist. Adam Maciazczyk made three saves on 18 shots.

Bates 0, Colby 0 (2OT)

At Waterville, David Friedman mad nine saves on 19 shots for 5-8-1 Colby in a 0-0 tie against Bates. Dan Spector faced nine shots and stopped one for the 6-5-3 Bobcats.

UM-Machias 4, St. Joseph’s 2

At Machias, Tatenda Chirusa scored three goals to lead the 9-7 University of Maine-Machias.

Corey Fleming scored a goal while Brett Howarth and Matt Salyer each recorded two assists. Courtenay Campbell made eight saves on 15 shots.

Matt Grauwiler and Michael Herrick each had goals for 7-9 St. Joseph’s while Mike Crockett tallied two assists and Nick Wallace stopped nine of 22 shots.

Western Connecticut 7, USM 0

At Danbury, Conn., Western Connecticut scored five goals in a 15-minute span of the first half en route to the win on Saturday.

Juan Diego Golguin scored twice for 9-7-3 Western Connecticut.

Jeff Gray and Dan Hills combined to make six saves on 20 shots for 3-16-1 USM.

UMFK 1, UMPI 0

At Fort Kent, Juan Murphy’s header 20 minutes into the Maine Athletic Conference quarterfinal gave the No. 3 University of Maine-Fort Kent Bengals the win.

Murphy took a corner kick from Gintaras Lenkutis and chipped it over goalkeeper Jon Cole of sixth-seeded UM-Presque Isle (5-9).

UMFK ‘keeper Zac Cote stopped all 14 shots he faced to record his first shutout of the season and the 8-6-1 Bengals’ fifth. The 5-9 Owls’ Cole also had 14 saves, facing 15 shots.

Women’s soccer

Towson 2, Maine 1

At Orono on Sunday, Jessie Whippo’s tally off a Melissa Mueller assist with 13:49 remaining gave the Tigers the victory.

Maggie Lennon scored first for 5-8-2 Towson off a Whippo assist. Goalkeeper Yasmin Alter made three saves on seven shots.

Jen Buckley scored for 6-6-3 Maine off a Kim Walsh assist in the first half, and Naomi Welsh made three saves on nine shots.

UM-Presque Isle 1, Husson 0

At Bangor, Stephanie Gagnon scored the game winning goal for the 8-8 University of Maine at Presque Isle with an assist from Meg Amero at 36:49.

Noreen Marcino made 15 saves on 23 shots for the Owls.

Meg Taylor faced nine shots and stopped six for 10-7 Husson.

UM-Machias 2, UM-Fort Kent 1

At Machias, Emma Apatu scored the winning goal for the 13-3 Clippers with 18 minutes remaining in the game.
