McCormick helps Dexter roll to win

DEXTER – The Piscataquis Community High School field hockey team held 33-goal scorer Kristy Veazie and 20-goal producer Erika Haiko to one goal between them in their Eastern Maine Class C final Saturday afternoon.

But Dexter proved there are plenty of other weapons in its arsenal.

Junior right inner Courtney McCormick scored three goals and freshman forward Meagan Fogarty scored the game’s first two goals as the Tigers beat PCHS of Guilford 7-2.

Haiko and Keriann Patterson notched the other goals for 17-0 Dexter, which claimed its third EM Class C title in four years and extended its unbeaten streak to 35 games (34-0-1). The Tigers will face 14-1-2 Hall-Dale at noon Saturday in Gorham in the state Class C championship game.

PCHS wound up 13-3-1 with all three losses coming at the hands of the Tigers.

“Kristy and Erika get a lot of the accolades, but I’ve tried to tell people that I have a great all-around team,” said fifth-year Dexter coach Margaret Veazie. “Courtney had three goals all season coming into this game. She tends to not want to shoot. I’ve tried to get her to shoot, but she wants to pass to Kristy all the time. That’s good, but when Kristy is bottled up, she can’t do that. She made the adjustment today and it was huge.”

“Meagan is awesome. She’s a great scorer,” added Veazie.

PCHS senior goalie Caterina Riitano, who faced 29 shots and finished with a fine 14-save performance, said, “They have a very good offensive team. If two of their high scorers can’t do it, they have other girls who come up and do what they need to do. They have a very, very good team.”

PCHS junior forward Karole-Anne Emery, who scored her 17th and 18th goals of the season, agreed.

“When one person doesn’t step up, people who don’t usually score step up and get the job done for them,” said Emery.

Fogarty opened the scoring 4:52 into the game when she was set up nicely at the far post by Patterson.

“We’ve been taught to shoot to the opposite post. Somebody is supposed to be there,” said Patterson.

Fogarty simply had to direct the ball into the open net.

Fogarty’s second of the game and ninth of the season came less than 10 minutes later. It came off a scramble created by a Karen Nelson shot.

“I went to it in the middle of the goal. It got by their goalie and there were only a couple of Guilford girls there,” said Fogarty.

McCormick made it 3-0 with 6:07 left in the half as she pounced on a Fogarty rebound.

“The goalie was down and it went under her leg. It popped out and I slammed it in,” said McCormick.

McCormick made it 4-0 2:17 into the second half by directing the ball behind Riitano after being set up by Kristy and Brittany Veazie.

Emery got one back for PCHS with 17:57 left with a blistering shot from Dexter goalie Cindy Koscielny’s right off an Amanda Howard pass.

But McCormick scored from a scramble in front only 39 seconds later.

Emery and Howard teamed up in similar fashion with 12:03 remaining, the first time Dexter has surrendered more than one goal in a game this season.

But Haiko and Patterson added insurance goals, Dexter’s 93rd and 94th of the season against six goals allowed.

Koscielny finished with three saves on five shots.

Dexter had 13 penalty corners to Piscataquis’ six.
