The rest of the story

Not to take anything away from the article on Buddy Nickerson (BDN, Oct. 20-21) because I feel that he deserves all that was written about him, but there is another side of the story that was left out. Buddy’s real name is Richard Dean Nickerson Jr., he has a father that also has type 1 Diabetes who is on the Insulin pump like Buddy, and like Buddy he was very involved with high school sports.

So in the future I think that you should do more research on your stories because there are so many families that have stepfathers and mothers with the father or mother of the child getting forgotten about or stuck in the background. Buddy also has an older sister that helped him become the person that he is today who wasn’t mentioned.

Holyoke on the mark

John Holyoke, thanks for your timely and insightful column on Oct 13-14 on the distinction between a hunter and a poacher. Few editors, members of the press and the general public seem to grasp what you so well pointed out.

Regardless of eyes and background anyone can be a hunter. It can be done with bow, gun, camera etc. And you can belong to hunting groups out of a concern for and interest in wildlife.

Such groups include Safari Club International, Rocky Mt. Elk Foundation, etc. Many of these exist and they do much more than hunt. You might write a series of columns for Mainers about these groups. I belong to many and seldom shoot at anything. The National Wild Turkey Federation is an example doing much to teach young people about conservation.

In Virginia, my friend Mike Roberts runs a program in Lynchburg called “Return to Nature” where he puts on hundreds of shows a year for thousands of school kids who live in urban and rural settings but often have no connection to nature.
