UM-Farmington, St. Joe’s to meet for title

The University of Maine-Farmington topped the University of Maine-Presque Isle 2-1 in four overtimes and St. Joseph’s of Standish knocked off the University of Maine-Machias 2-0 in women’s semifinal soccer action of the Maine Athletic Conference tournament Tuesday.

The Monks and the Beavers will meet at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the title match at Thomas College in Waterville.

At Farmington, the top-ranked Beavers needed four overtimes to put away UM-Presque Isle. Melissa Allen finally ended the contest when she converted a corner kick at the 7:33 mark of the fourth overtime.

Megan Woodcock scored the Beavers’ other goal on a corner kick at the 33:30 mark of the second half. Alyson Pontbriand made one save as UM-Farmington improved to 15-3.

UM-Presque Isle’s goal came on an own goal by a UM-Farmington player on a corner kick. Noreen Marcino garnered 13 saves as the Owls finished at 8-7.

At Standish, Tiffany Merrill and Kelly Premo booted home a goal apiece and the Monks outshot the Clippers 22-5 en route to the victory.

Marissa Regan recorded three saves for 10-7 St. Joseph’s. For 13-4 UM-Machias, Tricia Farrell stopped 10 shots.
