Bangor

. A “time barrel” stored since 1984 in the attic of the Thomas A. Hill House is on display in the Children’s Room at Bangor Public Library. As Bangor celebrated its sesquicentennial that year, people of all ages were invited to contribute to the barrel.

Artwork, essays, articles and memorabilia were added, with the intention that the container be opened – and added to – every 15 years.

The barrel was opened in February, and it will go back in the attic in December. If you are interested in contributing to the “time barrel,” contact staff in the Children’s Room at the library. Items on display are in a glass case in the stairwell gallery through Dec. 7. For information, call 947-8336, Ext. 111.

. Bangor firefighters hoped that this year they would top the $2,500 they had raised in the past for the Muscular Dystrophy Association for research and treatment.

They did just that, raising $12,500 through the “Fill the Boot” program outside Wal-Mart and Shaw’s stores during August.

. A ceremony at Fruit Street School on Oct. 19 celebrated the installation of the new playground at the facility. City officials, contributors, staff, pupils and members of the Parent Teacher Organization participated. In addition, the school celebrated their fund-raising effort for President Bush’s “America’s Fund for Afghan Children.”

. Bangor Area Breakfast Rotary has elected new officers: president, Jane Irving, Bangor Savings Bank; president-elect, Richard Cattelle, Richard Cattelle Associates; vice president, Gail Kelley, representative for U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe; treasurer, Jeff Fitch, Tate-Fitch; secretary, Heather Brountas, Bangor Barresi Financial Inc.

At its recent volunteer luncheon in Bangor, the Maine Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society honored Tobie Heald and Gary Page for helping staff the Bangor outreach office, and Tylene Kimball for organizing the MS Walk in Guilford. A.J. Whitney was recognized for hiking the Appalachian Trail to raise money in honor of his uncle, Anthony Vafiades of Bangor. WVII-TV Channel 7 was recognized for publicity given to the MS Readathon and the MS Walk.

. A horse owned by Brenda Varney of Bangor is now a five-time world champion. Aspenglow Genesis was named the reserve world champion in amateur pleasure driving during the Grand National and World Championship Morgan Horse Show, Oct. 7-14 in Oklahoma City. . U.S. Rep. John E. Baldacci spoke at William S. Cohen School on Oct. 29 in observance of Red Ribbon Week, a week of events designed to make pupils aware of the dangers of drug abuse.

Brewer

. Members of Brewer Cub Scout Troop 11 have planted and dedicated a 7-foot evergreen tree outside Brewer City Hall. The plaque reads:

“America and Freedom Stand Tall. Planted in Honor & Memory of the Victims of the September 11, 2001, Attack on America. We Will Never Forget. Cub Scout Troop 11 – Brewer, ME.”

Dedham

. The registrar of voters will be at the fire station to register and enroll voters 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6. Election Day.

Levant

. The town of Levant will hold its municipal election from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, at the Levant Town Office. Incumbent Donald Curtis is running unopposed for a three-year seat on the SAD 23 board of directors. Dean Andrews, incumbent Dan Maher, and Brent Pullen are running for two three-year seats on the Levant Board of Selectmen.

Old Town

. Keith Trembley Builder Inc. has been invited to the National Remodeler Show in Atlantic City to receive the Top 500 Remodeler Award. Keith Trembley Builder is one of only two firms in Maine to be recognized in the Qualified Remodeler Magazine.

Orono

.
