OWLS HEAD – A Spruce Head man was in critical condition Wednesday evening at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor after being struck by a car on Route 73.
Douglas Steinmetz, 36, was riding a bicycle south in the breakdown lane of Route 73 and turned left across the southbound lane, apparently to enter the driveway leading to the Owls Head Transportation Museum, said Sgt. Steven Burns of the Knox County Sheriff’s Department.
Steinmetz apparently did not see the 1997 Volkswagen Jetta, which was also traveling south, Burns said. The car, driven by Allison Johnson, 28, of South Thomaston struck Steinmetz and rolled over him, pinning him beneath the vehicle, the officer said.
Emergency response workers told Burns that Steinmetz was in and out of consciousness while they worked to free him from beneath the car. Steinmetz was wearing a bicycle safety helmet when he was struck, Burns said.
A LifeFlight helicopter took Steinmetz to EMMC, where he was being treated for serious injuries.
