MAINE vs. CARLETON

Time, site: 7:30 p.m., Alfond Arena, Orono

Records: Maine 0-0, Carleton 7-1

Series, last meeting: First meeting

Key players: Maine – 6-3 G Errick Greene (10.6 ppg, 4.9 rpg in 2000-2001), 6-2 G Derrick Jackson (6.3 ppg, 3.4 rpg), 6-7 F Clayton Brown (3.2 ppg, 1.4 rpg), 6-4 F Rickey White (2.8 ppg, 1.2 rpg), 7-0 C Justin Rowe (did not play); Carleton – G Mike Smart (13.0 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 3.1 apg), F Josh Poirier (12.9 ppg, 6.4 rpg), F Paul Larmand (12.0 ppg, 3.6 rpg), G Jafeth Maseruka (11.3 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 2.1 apg), F Charlie Cattran (6.1 ppg, 5.4 rpg)

Outlook: In many years, the Black Bears begin their exhibition season with games against club teams of former college players. This year, they face a bona fide college team in the Ravens from Ottawa, Ontario. The Ravens were 21-1 last year, finished fifth in the nation, and return their top eight players from that squad. Smart and Maseruka were each All-Canadian selections. The Ravens’ weakness is a lack of overall team height, which, with the 7-foot Rowe in the middle, is a Black Bear strength. Brown can score inside and outside, and White plays bigger than his 6-4 height would indicate.
