ORRINGTON – Anna Schwarcz, 12-year-old daughter of Mary Ann and Arthur Schwarcz of Orrington, on Monday presented a special gift to the Washington County Sheriff’s Department in Machias.

With help from her parents, a friend and University of Maine Cooperative Extension 4-H Program, Schwarcz raised $700 to buy a bulletproof vest for Caine, the department’s police dog.

Maine Public Television filmed the event for “Zoom,” a program that airs at 5 p.m. weekdays on the network.

Schwarcz’s presentation will be aired on “Zoom” in January as part of a feature called “Zoom into Action,” a segment focusing on youngsters who volunteer in community service projects across the country.

Schwarcz, who previously raised money for two police dog vests for the Bangor Police Department, made pet items such as dog biscuits and flowers for collars. She sold the items at the Blue Hill Fair.

“I did this project because I love animals, especially dogs,” she said. “I would have another dog if I could.”

Schwarcz, who has a golden retriever, Duncan, participates in 4-H as an independent member with Terry Swazey, her 4-H adviser.

Jennifer Lobley, 4-H coordinator for Hancock and Washington counties, suggested the project to Schwarcz.

The vest was accepted by Washington County Deputy Sheriff Kate Fleury, who handles Caine.

“We’re proud of Anna,” Lobley said. “She is an energetic 4-H member who has contributed to her community in important ways.”
