SURRY – A Surry motorcyclist was injured in a collision with a car Saturday afternoon on Route 172 near the Ellsworth line.

According to Deputy Jeff McFarland of the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, Carl Sederquist, 66, lives on Lincoln Lane just off the main road.

Sederquist had stopped his motorcycle on the right side of the road to get his mail. He told the officer that he checked his mirror, but did not look over his shoulder before starting across to the left side of the road. He did not see an oncoming vehicle driven by Heather Dematteo, 21, of Blue Hill and pulled into her path.

Dematteo swerved to avoid the motorcycle, which hit her car on the passenger side.

Sederquist suffered a badly fractured left leg and was taken by ambulance to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth and later was transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. He was listed in serious condition Sunday evening. Dematteo was not injured in the accident.

There was significant damage to Dematteo’s 1997 Saturn, according to McFarland. Sederquist’s 2000 Royal was demolished.
