ORONO – Leah Voss racked up 12 kills and nine digs as the University of Maine volleyball team clinched the fourth and final America East volleyball playoff spot Sunday with a 30-25, 30-20, 30-18 triumph over Stony Brook.
Adrienne Poplawski contributed 12 kills, two blocks, six block assists and three service aces. Cheryl Elliot notched 45 assists, six digs and four kills, Carmen Gabriel added 11 kills, seven digs and four block assists and Claire Poliquin registered eight kills as Maine improved to 14-11 (7-5 America East).
On Saturday, Voss pounded out 18 kills and three services aces and scooped up 10 digs to lead Maine by Hartford 30-22, 30-25, 30-24.
Carmen Gabriel chipped in with 16 digs, eight kills and four block assists for the 13-11 (6-5 America East) Black Bears. Cheryl Elliot logged 44 assists and five block assists, Claire Poliquin added nine kills and four block assists and Adrienne Poplawski recorded seven kills, nine digs and six block assists.
Women’s ice hockey
Bears go 0-1-1 over weekend
At Providence, R.I., Sunday, Danielle Culgin’s shorthanded goal with 9:45 remaining enabled the Providence College women’s hockey team to tie Maine 2-2.
Providence had won Saturday’s game 7-2.
On Sunday, Rebecca Culver and Kelly Nelson had given Maine a pair of one-goal leads but Meredith Roth and Culgin equalized.
Amanda Cronin made 20 saves for 2-3-1 Maine and Amy Quinlan had 19 stops for the 3-2-1 Friars.
On Saturday, Jenn Butsch netted a pair of goals and Kim Mathias recorded a goal and two assists as the Friars rolled by the Black Bears.
Karen Droog and Tracy Caridade scored for Maine. Nelson assisted on both.
Men’s soccer
UM-Farmington 3, Thomas 1
At Waterville Saturday, Jeff Meinhart poured in two goals and an assist to lift the University of Maine-Farmington to the Maine Athletic Conference title.
UM-Farmington will host the NAIA Region 10 championship next weekend.
Brian Mawhinney added a goal and Justin Groshon contributed an assist for the 13-3-0 Beavers. Goalies Mike Hauser and Ryan Hersey combined for two saves.
For the 8-9 Terriers, Scott Mullen converted a Scott Sibley feed. Ryan Conley registered 17 saves on 34 shots.
Drexel 6, Maine 0
At Orono Sunday, Steve Matthews amassed two goals and an assist to lift Drexel over Maine.
Jim Greco saved one of seven shots for 7-10 Drexel.
For the 2-14-0 Black Bears, Mat Cosgriff and Josh Sjostrom combined for five saves on 21 shots.
Field hockey
Springfield 2, Southern Maine 1
At Springfield, Mass., Liz Omura deflected a shot by Melissa Beals into the upper right-hand corner of the net with 16:57 remaining in the second half to lift Springfield College over Southern Maine in the semi-finals of the ECAC Division III tournament.
Liz Sena logged four saves on eight shots as Springfield improved to 18-7-0.
Renee Heath converted a penalty corner for the Huskies’ goal. She was set up by Darci Holland and Becky Manson. Jessie Superchi garnered three saves on 11 shots for 13-9-0 Southern Maine.
Women’s soccer
UM-Farmington 3, St. Joseph’s 0
At Waterville Saturday, Shannon Mailhot and Julia Malek tallied a goal and an assist each as the University of Maine-Farmington topped St. Joseph’s of Standish in the Maine Athletic Conference championship.
The Beavers ended the Monks’ two-year reign as MAC champions and earned the right to compete in the Region 10 championships next weekend.
Richelle Dube added a goal for 12-3-0 UM-Farmington. Alyson Pontbriand recorded one save on two shots.
St. Joseph’s goalie Marissa Regan turned away seven of 14 shots as her team finished at 10-8-0.
