HAMPDEN – In the two contested council races Tuesday, voters chose two newcomers over two incumbents by narrow margins. District 1 saw Edward C. Murphy defeat current Mayor William J. Romano by a count of 150 to 138. And in District 4, state Rep. Brian M. Duprey edged incumbent William B. Gamble 188 to 161.

Thomas R. Brann was re-elected unopposed in District 2 as was Ricky Briggs in District 3.

Unopposed incumbents Kimberly R. Slininger and Steven Lord were re-elected to the school committee. Herbert Frost was elected unopposed as a water district trustee.

Voters approved a charter amendment redrawing district lines by a vote of 886 to 182.
