BUCKSPORT -By more than a 2-1 ratio, voters Tuesday authorized town officials to raise and appropriate $150,000 for street and road improvements.
The local article passed by a vote of 573-248.
Approval of the article will allow the town to accelerate its road construction program during the next construction season.
The town’s charter, however, requires that any expenditures of more than $100,000 go to the voters for approval. Earlier this year, Town Manager Roger Raymond told town councilors that projects slated for the coming year will total more than that threshold amount.
Voters also re-elected town councilors. Incumbents David Keene with 692 votes and Edward Rankin Sr. with 717 votes were re-elected to three-year terms on the Town Council. Elizabeth Whitney received 743 votes to fill an unexpired two-year term on the council.
Judith Belton received 33 write-in votes to win a three-year term on the school committee. Four other write-in candidates also received votes.
According to Town Clerk Kathy Gray, a number of voters cast write-in votes for the school committee but failed to include their candidate’s address, making their ballot invalid.
