Seniors dominate volleyball All-State team Feck, Marble receive honors for second time

One thing about the Maine All-State Volleyball team, it’s a select club that’s hard to join, especially if you’re not a senior.

In that respect, the second annual all-state team proves that point better than the first as all six team members are seniors.

Appropriately enough, the only girls to crash the seniors-only party last year – Woodland’s Ashley Marble and Calais’ Nanci Feck – head up this year’s team.

Marble is also the only selection to make the team via unanimous vote of all 12 of the state’s varsity coaches – and do so twice.

The other members of the first team are Woodland teammates Alicia Guptill and Julia Knights, Annie Woodsum from Narraguagus High School in Harrington, and Bucksport’s Jessie Carter.

Marble closed out a brilliant volleyball career at Woodland with a season in which she equaled Woodland’s season record for kills with 184, the same number she had last year. The outside hitter also recorded 28 aces as she was 129-for-148 on serves (87.2 percent), 72 digs, five blocks and five assists as she helped lead Woodland to its second straight state title.

Feck served at an 89.4 percent clip as she recorded 117 service points. The senior setter also finished with a whopping 160 assists plus 55 kills, 50 aces, and three blocks as she led the Blue Devils into the state semifinals.

Knights, an honorable mention last year, was the other half of Woodland’s domineering bookend hitters. She was 88.3 (197-for-223) percent from the service line with 37 aces. She also had 133 kills, 33 digs, 21 blocks and three assists.

While Marble and Knights got much of the notice, Guptill was unheralded but steady and invaluable as she broke season records for assists (236) and digs (74) while serving at 86.5 percent (166-for-192) with 20 aces. The 2000 second-teamer also had 21 kills.

Woodsum served it up with the best of them as she was 209-for-225 (92.8 percent) from the line with 144 points. She also had 63 digs, 47 kills, 17 assists, and seven blocks.

Carter was equally impressive at the service line as she was 134-for-144 (93.1 percent) with 29 aces. The versatile senior, a 2000 honorable mention, also had 71 kills, 44 digs, 24 blocks and five assists.

The 2001 second team is pretty solid as well with seniors Amanda Verrill (96-113 service, 65 digs, 55 kills, 13 blocks) from Cony of Augusta, Sarah Irving (80-124 service, 21 aces, 46 kills) from Machias, Calais’ Katie Smith (45 service points, 21 aces, 104 kills, 50 blocks, 22 saves, 17 assists), Jeanna Woodward (92.9 service percentage, 26 aces, 36 assists, 22 digs) from Jonesport-Beals, and Bucksport’s Kelly White (120-136 service, 18 aces, 71 assists, 54 digs), plus junior Katrina Rudd (172-201 service, 13 aces, 30 kills) of Machias.

This year’s honorable mentions are Crystal Hobbs and Jasmine Marie Peterson of Mount Desert Island, Woodland’s Kelsy Snowman, Narraguagus’ Amanda Barbee, Amanda Carter and Annie Henderson of Machias, Cassie Hopkins and Ali Tuttle from Washington Academy in East Machias, Lubec’s Amber Lavalley and Logan Newman, Gorham’s Alicia Viernes and Star Shaw, plus Samantha McGuire and Jaime Carmichael of Bucksport.
