BANGOR – Voters returned incumbent Phyllis M. Shubert to the Bangor school committee for her sixth term and she will be joined by first-time committee member James F. Cox, who edged Eric C. Taylor for the remaining open three-year seat.

Tuesday’s election results were as follows: Shubert, 2,702; Cox, 2,423; Taylor, 2,249.

Shubert, 54, is president of the Maine School Boards Association’s board of directors and has served on state committees working to improve the recruitment and retention of teachers and administrators and to develop a new teacher certification process.

Cox, 49, is a lawyer who previously served on the Bangor City Council in 1982 and 1985. He fills a seat vacated by his wife, Suzanne, who left the school committee after two terms.
