Newcomers win seats on council Calais voters increase city’s borrowing power

CALAIS – Voters were in the mood for a change Tuesday night when they elected two new faces to the City Council.

Nancy Gillis and Alan Dwelley walked away with 391 and 298 votes, respectively. Gillis will leave her slot on the school committee.

Incumbent Gregg Carter, who had served on the council for the past decade, ended up in third place with 289 votes. After Carter was Trevor Hold, 256 votes, and John “Jake” Chambers Sr. with 177 votes.

Voters decided to keep incumbent Anne Perry on the school committee. She garnered 472 votes. They also gave the nod to Martha McIntyre with 370 votes. Each will serve for three years.

With the election of Gillis to the council, it is now up to the school committee to appoint someone to replace Gillis.

Deborah Howe and Peter Leon trailed with 269 and 232 votes, respectively, for the school board.

Voters overwhelmingly approved a change in the city’s authority to borrow money to renovate the high and elementary schools. With a vote of 544 to 226, they agreed to increase the city’s borrowing capacity for school construction to $6.6 million, nearly double the amount the city could borrow in the past.

Voters also overwhelmingly approved a general obligation bond referendum that will allow the city to borrow $2 million to fix its wastewater treatment facility.
