Other 75 percent

At least one out of every three drivers in Maine has the red white and blue emblazoned somewhere on their vehicle. The president has unprecedented approval ratings. Yet the voter turnout on Tuesday was only 25 percent. The Bangor Daily News’ front page article regarding the passage of the “university construction bond” began, “Mainers showed how much they value education…”

While it is true that, on average, 60 percent of those voting approved the bonds on the ballot, it must be remembered that only 25 percent of the registered voters actually voted. The article should have read, “15 percent of the eligible voters in Maine showed how much they value education..,” because 75 percent of the eligible voters in Maine apparently don’t realize the importance of expressing an opinion.

The next time an article, letter or op-ed appears in the paper decrying the fact that Maine is the highest-taxed state in the union relative to annual income, I hope it is recognized that only 10 percent of the voters in this state actually have the right to complain.
