Area communities plan activities in honor of Veterans Day

Bradley

The Bradley post office will hold a Veterans Day ceremony at 9 a.m. today outside the post office building at 165-A Main St. The American Legion from Orono will perform a solemn flag ceremony. The local Boy Scouts will lead the community in the Pledge of Allegiance. Danny Delaware, a volunteer firefighter, will play taps on his trumpet. Jason Cook will sing the anthem and “You’re A Grand Old Flag.” The public is invited.

Bangor

Maine’s Korean War veterans of Burton-Goode-Sargent Chapter 1 will add 12 names, including that of a Medal of Honor recipient, to the Maine Korean War Memorial at Mount Hope Cemetery in a public ceremony at 11 a.m. Sunday. The additions will bring the total list to 245 area servicemen who lost their lives during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953.

The ceremony will include congressional candidate Sean Faircloth. Several of the names being added were not previously classified by the Department of Defense as casualties of war since many were transferred with wounds to Japan where they subsequently died of hepatitis. Two others were not classified as Maine residents for various reasons.

New names will include: Capt. Tauno O. Brooks (Air Force), 1st Lt. Neil A. Chapman (Air Force), Pvt. Marlan A. Dyment (Army), Cpl. Reginald E. Gervais (Army), 1st Lt. Donald E. Glidden (Air Force), Pfc. Richard M. Golden (Marine Corps), Cpl. Mahlon L. Raymond (Marine Corps), Staff Sgt. Eugene E. Sherwood (Air Force), Pfc. Earl A. Sweat (Marine Corps), Cpl. Laurence A. Reed (Army), Cpl. David B. Champagne (Marine Corps, Medal of Honor winner). Any families who believe a relative’s name should be on the official Korean War Memorial should call Fred Hardin at 825-4065.

Bangor

Because of possible conflict with community events on Sunday, the Greater Bangor Veterans Parade Committee has scheduled the Veterans Day parade for 10:15 a.m. Monday.

The parade will form in Brewer at the shopping plaza and travel down Wilson Street, across Chamberlain Bridge, down Main Street in Bangor to the reviewing stand at the corner of Broad Street.

Parade marshal CW-4 Malcolm Buchanan and his staff will accompany honorary parade marshal U.S. Rep. John Baldacci. Current members of armed services led by the 101st Air Refueling Wing Color Guard and the 195th Army Band will form the first division. The second division will consist of veterans of World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam and other military actions, and representatives of veterans organizations from northern and eastern Maine.

Junior ROTC battalions from Nokomis, Hermon and Bangor high schools will participate along with members of the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America, members of the Civil Air Patrol and other youths.

Floats and color guard from the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department, along with Bangor, Brewer, Bucksport, Hermon, Nokomis and Old Town high school bands will be on hand with the Governors Band and the Anah Temple Shrine Band. A brief ceremony will be held at the reviewing stand, with an invocation by Rabbi Dr. Laurence Milder, the national anthem by the 195th Army Band and a three-volley rifle salute by the Bangor High School Junior ROTC followed by taps by Hal Wheeler. The parade will disband on Exchange Street.

At 11 a.m. there will be a flyover by a KC-135 from the 101st Air Refueling Wing and helicopters from the Army Aviation Support Facility at Bangor International Airport. The aircraft will fly over Main Street.

Cole Land Transportation Museum will kick off ceremonies at 9:15 a.m. At this time they will pick up those who want to leave their cars at Bangor’s Exchange Street parking lot. After the parade, at 12:30 p.m., the museum will present awards to the nine area schoolchildren who are winners of the museum’s essay contest, “What Freedom Means to Me After Interviewing a Veteran.” The awards will take place in the museum’s conference room followed by the Bangor Band concert at 2 p.m.

The museum then will offer walking sticks to World War II veterans who are able to attend the event who have not received one previously. To receive a walking stick, participants must sign up for one in Brewer before the parade on Monday. For information, call 990-3600.

Orono

The University of Maine ROTC will hold a vigil from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday in honor of Veterans Day. The honor guard will stand outside the Fogler Library during those hours.

Togus

Two ceremonies will take place Sunday at the Veterans Affairs Medical and Regional Office Center at Togus. At 8 a.m., a flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremony will take place at the flagpole. The Maine National Guard Color Guard will provide taps and a volley. Refreshments will follow in the lobby of Building 200E.

At 2 p.m., the Maine Veterans Coordinating Committee will present a ceremony held by the Veterans of Foreign Wars in the gym at Togus. The 195th Army Band will perform, followed by remarks by Maine Adjutant Gen. Joseph E. Tinkham and the laying of wreaths by veterans organizations.

Trenton

Community members are invited to attend a Veterans Day flag-raising ceremony at 11 a.m. Sunday to coincide with the 11th month, 11th day and 11th hour that marked the end of World War I.

The ceremony will take place at the American Legion Post on Route 3, and is intended to honor veterans of World War I from Hancock County. The flag used in Sunday’s ceremony then will be flown at the Hancock County Veterans Memorial.

Winterport

Argonne Post 138 of the American Legion will observe Veterans Day at 10:45 a.m. Sunday at the Winterport Memorial Library.

The event is designed to honor all Winterport and Frankfort active duty and reserve members of the armed forces. A reading of all known area veterans’ names will take place.

Anyone who would like to add a name to the list should call Gary Crossman at 223-4480 or Phil Sherwood at 223-4273. All units wanting to participate should be at the Winterport Memorial Library no later than 10:40 a.m. The service will occur rain or snow.

Presque Isle

The University of Maine at Presque Isle will recognize Veterans Day with a noontime ceremony Monday at the Campus Center.

The ceremony will include opening remarks and a Pledge of Allegiance by Joseph Owens, UMPI student and retired U.S. Navy veteran. Dean Brakel, student and retired U.S. Air Force veteran, will give a patriotic reading. UMPI President Nancy Hensel will make remarks, and assistant professor John Zaborney will introduce a film about Iwo Jima.

The UMPI ceremony will close with remarks by Pete Miesburger, quartermaster and past commander of the Caribou VFW and former VFW state commander; the reading of a student essay; and concluding remarks by Owens.
