If the weather doesn’t make itself a factor in Saturday’s LTC championship football games, fans should be treated to an exciting exhibition of athletic prowess, no matter which of the two 1 p.m. games they attend.
All four LTC finalists – Winslow and Belfast in Class B, Bucksport and Foxcroft Academy in Class C – have several outstanding skill position players with the ability to change the flow or outcome of a game with one play.
Class B – No. 2 Belfast (8-2) at No. 1 Winslow (10-0), Poulin Field: This is the third straight year the two teams have met for the crown. Belfast has won three of the last four LTC championship games while the Black Raiders are defending champs and currently riding a 21-game win streak.
This is the seventh consecutive year the two teams have met in the playoffs, with Belfast winning all but last year’s game.
“Yeah, I guess you could say we’re like death and taxes,” Winslow coach Mike Siviski said with a laugh. “This is the kind of game you dream of playing in as a kid.”
You want people to watch? There are plenty.
Start with Belfast and Jeff Parenteau (1,489 yards, 196 carries, 17 touchdowns), a small but tougher-than-nails tailback with corkscrew twists and turns to free himself from tackles. Ben Cowan (34-for-64, 730 yards, 11 TDs, three interceptions) is the crafty quarterback and Colby Horne, a mercurial wingback (12 catches, 269 yards, four TDs), is his favorite target. Chris Duval has 170 yards and two TDs on seven receptions. Fullback Matt Welch is a solid blocker, short-yardage runner and pass catcher.
Winslow counters with the LTC’s top passer in Chris Langlais (56-109, 983 yards, 17 TDs, four interceptions) and plenty of guys to throw to with split end Sam Hapworth (605 yards and nine TDs on 30 receptions) and wingback Chris McInnis (282 yards, 15 catches, five TDs). Throw in 1,179-yard rusher Ricky Vigue (14 TDs) and fullback Derek Runnels (515 yards and four TDs), and there are many options.
Class C – No. 2 Foxcroft Academy (8-2) at No. 1 Bucksport (9-1), Carmichael Field: This is a rematch of the 1997 LTC final in which the Ponies prevailed 26-7. Although none of the current players on either team’s rosters were in high school then, they were freshmen the last time the Golden Bucks made the playoffs.
While Bucksport’s last postseason appearance was a semifinal loss to Mattanawcook Academy in 1998, the visiting Ponies are in the home stretch of their eighth straight playoff season. Ironically, it’s the Golden Bucks who have the edge in experience as FA has retooled its lineup with several sophomore and junior starters.
“One of the things, if we have an advantage at all, is we have experienced kids playing defense whereas they’re a little younger than we are,” said Bucks coach Joel Sankey.
The last meeting between these teams ended with Bucksport’s closest victory of the season – 24-14. Sankey isn’t putting much stock in that.
“You just throw the first game out,” he said. “It’s a playoff game and we both know what’s at stake.”
“They controlled the ball the last time we played them with 52 offensive plays,” said FA coach Paul Withee. “We’ve made some changes since then and we’ve thrown in some wrinkles.”
Both teams have plenty of weapons.
Bucksport’s backfield is loaded with speed and skill with running backs Warren Chase (72 carries, 480 yards, 8 TDs), Chris Woodman (91 for 651, 10 TDs) and Rustin Ames (89, 545, 7 TDs) plus quarterback Chris McHale (22-for-53, 317 yards, six TDs, four interceptions). Receivers are more than capable with tight end Brian Sullivan (five catches, 90 yards, TD). Ames has eight catches for 106 yards and three TDs while Chase has three for 48 and one TD.
The Ponies are led by backs Josh Sands (127 for 777, nine TDs), Danny White (77 for 576, six TDs), and Derek Morong (58 for 471, six TDs) along with QB Josh Withee (39-99, 645 yards, eight TDs, nine interceptions). White leads receivers with 236 yards and three TDs on 15 catches. Sands has 10 catches for 2 TDs and 193 yards while Morong has five for 125 and one TD.
The top two kickers in the league are on display as well as the Bucks’ Trevor LaLonde broke the points record for kickers this season with 95 points. White has 89 points, 66 on touchdowns.
