BREWER – A local woman who made a $1 donation to help benefit the Jimmy Fund has been rewarded for her good deed with a new sport utility vehicle.
Kerri Lynch of Lucerne-in-Maine bought a $1 scratch card at the drive-through window of a Burger King in Brewer on Aug. 27 as part of a restaurant promotion to benefit the fund, which supports cancer research.
As she and her two sons, Cameron, 12, and Caleb, 8, were driving away with their burgers and fries, Cameron scratched the card to reveal the picture of a 2002 Hyundai Sante Fe.
“My son and I were both astonished when he scratched off the card and found out we had won a new Santa Fe,” Lynch said. A longtime supporter of the Jimmy Fund, she said, “This program is a great way for people to support the good work that the Jimmy Fund does for people with cancer.”
More than 300 Burger King restaurants in New England participated in the “A Chance for Kids” program over a five-week period.
This year the program raised more than $575,000 for the Jimmy Fund, nearly double the amount of the previous year. This is the second year that Hyundai teamed up with New England Burger King restaurants as the donor of the grand prize.
Jack Quirk Sr., owner of Quirk Hyundai in Bangor, presented the keys to Lynch at the Wilson Street Burger King in October.
“We all know people who have been touched by cancer,” Quirk said. “The Jimmy Fund does an excellent job helping families who are struggling with this disease.”
