Froats, Cronin earn shutouts for UM women Bears pound Cornell; now 4-3-1

ITHACA, N.Y. – Cindy Biron knocked in the game-winner in the first period as the UMaine Black Bears shut down the Cornell Big Red 3-0 Sunday in women’s ice hockey action.

Maine topped Cornell 4-0 in Saturday’s game.

In Sunday’s game, Emily Stevens and Tristan Desmet each added a goal for the Bears, now 4-3-1.

Andrea Steranko, Jarin Sjogren, Laura Maddin and Meagan Aarts each contributed an assist. Dawn Froats stopped 22 shots for Maine, while Sanya Sandahl made 20 saves on 23 shots for 0-4 Cornell.

In Saturday’s game, Aarts knocked in two goals and Tracy Caridade contributed two assists.

Sjogren and Nicole Munro each scored a goal for the Bears. Steranko added an assist and Amanda Cronin made 15 saves on 15 shots. Liz Connelly stopped 24 of 28 shots.

Women’s basketball

UMPI splits weekend

At Presque Isle, the University of Maine-Presque Isle split a pair of games in the Star City Tournament, defeating Fisher College of Boston 78-60 Sunday and falling to Nova Scotia Agricultural College (NSAC) 64-60 Saturday in women’s basketball action.

NSAC earned the tournament championship, downing St. Thomas University of Opa Locka, Fla., 53-48 in overtime Sunday.

Sunday, the Owls put five players in double figures, paced by Rachel Larlee’s 19 points. Erica McGary added 14, Sam Berry tallied 13, and Heather Noonan and Natalie Murray netted 10 apiece.

Angela Hamilton led 1-2 Fisher with 24 points and Jackie Gilman pitched in with 22.

Saturday, Carla Shaw’s 14 points and Jenna Tait’s 12 points spearheaded the well-balanced NSAC offense. Sarah Connell and Catherine Shepherd added 11 and 10, respectively.

Larlee poured in 27 points and McGary netted 19 more for the Owls.

UMFK drops two in tourney

At Buffalo, N.Y., Rameeka Beal scored 20 points and Sharia Marcus added 11 as Five Towns College (N.Y.) topped UM-Fort Kent 71-38 in the consolation game of the Daemon College Tournament Sunday.

Daemon College beat the Bengals 109-23 in Saturday’s tournament game.

In Sunday’s game, Joy Gervais led UMFK with 15 points and nine rebounds. Heidi Fisher followed with seven points, nine rebounds and two assists.

In Saturday’s game, Jessica Ruddell scored 19 points and Chrystal DeRosa and Erin Howarth each poured in 16 points to power Daemon. Angelique Bourgoin scored six points and had nine rebounds for the Bengals, while Gervais grabbed 13 rebounds.

Volleyball

UMaine takes weekend matches

At Orono Sunday, the Black Bears knocked off second-ranked Northeastern with scores of 30-27, 24-30, 30-27 and 30-22 in UMaine’s regular-season final.

The match win was the fifth straight for the Bears (16-11), who defeated Albany 30-14, 30-20, 30-22 Saturday.

In Sunday’s match, Leah Voss hammered out a match-high 20 kills to go with 19 digs and Adrienne Poplawski had 17 kills and 11 digs. Cheryl Elliott racked up a match-high 53 assists and also had six kills and three service aces. Amber Sammons added 13 digs and three aces. Carmen Gabriel had 21 digs and 12 kills.

Lindsay Wagner paced the Huskies (21-10) with 14 kills and 13 digs.

In Saturday’s match, Poplawski recorded 13 kills, nine digs and five block assists. Voss had 12 kills and 10 digs. Elliot contributed 34 assists, nine digs, five kills and seven block assists while Gabriel and Claire Poliquin tallied seven kills apiece.

Alissa Gibbs totaled 16 kills and 10 digs for the 4-19 Great Danes. Fallon Hearst added 13 kills.

Men’s basketball

St. Aquinas 106, UMFK 88

At Buffalo, N.Y. Saturday, K’Brio Kimball tossed in 13 points and added eight assists and six rebounds to lead St. Aquinas (N.Y.) past the Bengals in the consolation game of the Daemon College Tournament.

Chuck Schuba led St. Aquinas with 20 points.

Morris Young scored 25 for UM-Fort Kent. Barry Bryan contributed 21. Matthew Alarcon had 14 points, seven assists and three steals.
