Two of the three defending state champions were knocked off in Western Maine football championship action Saturday as Portland earned the regional Class A title and Boothbay took the Class C crown.
The Bulldogs toppled Massabesic of Waterboro 13-7 for the Class A title. York was the Western Maine Class B winner, beating Scarborough 35-26. The Class C Seagulls held off Winthrop 34-18.
The three Western Maine champs will face Eastern Maine winners Bangor of Class A, Class B Winslow, and Class C Bucksport, for state titles Saturday.
Class A Portland (10-1) defeated the defending state champion Mustangs (6-5) thanks to two touchdown passes from Keith Derrig to Nick Nappi. Mike Bennett led Massabesic with 84 yards on 19 carries.
Class B York, now 10-1, defended its 2000 WM title with the win over the Red Storm. Sean Bradburn and Nate Schoff scored two touchdowns apiece for the Wildcats. York QB Chris Kiernan tallied 155 yards on 9-of-12 passing. Nial DeMena, Mike Slovak, Steve McNaughton and Marcus Ellison each scored for Scarborough (8-3).
In Class C, the Seagulls (9-2) shocked the Ramblers (10-1), who had not lost a game since the 1999 Class C state championship against Mattanawcook of Lincoln. Boothbay quarterback Will Carroll went 7-for-12 and passed for 66 yards, including two TD passes to Billy Hardwick.
