Carmel burglary, chase lead to arrests

CARMEL – Two teen-agers are being held on $10,000 bail each after police arrested them in connection with a Sunday afternoon burglary near the intersection of Fuller Road and Route 2.

Justin Sylvester, 19, of Carmel and Zachariah Hamilton, 19, of Bangor are being held at Penobscot County Jail after admitting to the Class B burglary, said Deputy Sheriff Tom Burgess.

The pair had stolen a .357-caliber Magnum handgun and a .270-caliber rifle with a scope, according to police. They were in the house when the homeowner returned to find a Ford Taurus station wagon in his driveway.

Hamilton left the scene in the vehicle while Sylvester ran into the woods. The owner chased Hamilton in his own vehicle for 15 miles in a pursuit that reached speeds of 70 mph, said Burgess. Hampden police eventually pulled over both individuals at 5:50 p.m. after receiving reports of erratic driving. During the chase, Hamilton threw the handgun out of the vehicle somewhere in Hampden. Police returned to the home with K-9 units, but were unable to locate Sylvester.

Sylvester also ditched the weapon he had been carrying, leaving the rifle on the side of Fuller Road. Area residents reported seeing the individual throughout the day, but police were unable to locate him until his arrest at his home around 1:30 a.m. Monday. Police recovered both of the abandoned weapons.

The pair had entered the home by forcing a back door open with a screwdriver, said Burgess. The owner of the home had been burglarized a few weeks earlier. During that burglary, a jar containing nearly $1,000 was stolen. No suspects were found in the previous case, said the deputy.

“We’re still looking into a lot of this,” said Burgess. “We’ll look at the car and fingerprints and some other information in the next few days.”
