If I read your article (“Maine eyes tax on sales via Net Revenue could plug budget gap”, BDN, Oct. 26) correctly, the state projects it would have received an extra $43 million if Internet sales were taxed this year. Since we have a 5 percent tax that means they are projecting $860 million in Internet sales. If those figures are correct, that would mean an average purchase of approximately $675 by every man, woman and child in the state, through the Internet.
These questionable statistics seem to be preparing the ground for new laws and more taxes. The Maine Legislature may as well be the first to tax Internet sales – they tax everything else.
