BANGOR – State and local officers of the Maine State Organization Daughters of the American Revolution participated in Veterans Day ceremonies at the Maine Korean War Memorial in Mount Hope Cemetery.
State Regent Polly Bartow, a member of Molly Ockett Chapter, led those assembled in the National Anthem.
Also attending were Susan Tukey, honorary state regent and member of Pemaquid Chapter; Donna Hoffmann, national co-chairman of the marshal’s committee and member of Ramassoc Chapter; Carolyn Kelley; Donna Farnham; Jane Wheldon, Esther Eayres Chapter, Orono; Margaret Montcalm, Mount Desert Isle Chapter.
Several members of the Frances Dighton Williams Chapter in Bangor also attended, including chapter Regent Suzan Rudnicki of Carmel.
The Bangor chapter sponsors the Moses Greenleaf Society, Children of the American Revolution, based in Bangor. Louise Towle of Bangor is the senior president of the group.
Six C.A.R. members laid a wreath at the base of the Korean War Memorial. They were: Katherine Campbell, Stesha Rudnicki, Kasey Holland, Kevin Holland, Kyle Holland and Mackayla Keith.
After the Veterans Day activities, the members of the DAR dedicated the stone the organization purchased for the walkway. The stone is engraved: “In highest esteem and with grateful thanks to our courageous veterans.”
The Maine State Organization has more than 1,000 DAR members, women who are descended from those who served in the Revolution or provided patriotic service during that time.
Projects include the DAR American History Essay Contest, the Good Citizens Contest, preservation of historical records, supporting activities for patients in veteran’s facilities, and distributing citizenship manuals for those applying for naturalization.
