Fruit Street School

Two pupils from Fruit Street School in Bangor were among 40 youngsters from 10 Northeastern states honored for their artwork in the Crayola Dreammaker Contest sponsored by Binney & Smith.

Nikita Kacer, now in fourth grade, and Kylie Jacobs, now in second grade, were presented wooden plaques during a recent assembly at the school. Winning artwork by the girls is being shown in a traveling exhibit.

Brewer High

An open house for the $750,000 addition to Brewer High School will be held during parent-teacher conferences Nov. 19.

The addition includes a library and students services area.

Participants in the ribbon cutting, scheduled for 8:05 p.m. that day, include Betsey Webb, superintendent; Bob Thomas, chairman of the Brewer School trustees; and Jerry Goss, principal.

The Class of 1975 will hold an informal gathering of class-”

mates 7:30-9:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23, at Mulligan’s Lounge, Felt Brook Golf Center, Route 1A, Holden.

Mock trial

BANGOR – The third in this week’s series of Maine State High School Mock Trial competitions will be held 1-5 p.m. Friday at Penobscot County Superior Court.

Participating schools at the Bangor competition are Mattanawcook Academy, Lincoln; and Mount Desert Island High School, Bar Harbor.

The contests are sponsored by a coalition of the University of Maine School of Law, University of Southern Maine College of Education and Human Development, the Maine State Bar Association and the Maine Bar Foundation.

More than 400 students and 70 volunteer lawyers and judges have participated in the competitions throughout the state.

Colleges

Bates College

Peter D. Currie, the son of Allan and Linda Currie of Bangor, is participating in the Junior Semester Abroad Program at Bates College in Lewiston.

A psychology major and Dean’s List student, Currie will study

at the University of Stirling in England. A 1998 graduate of

Bangor High, he also partici-

pated in the Longley School Monitoring Program and Into the Streets Program at Bates.

Husson College

Dean S. Read, president of Bar Harbor Banking and Trust Co., recently was inducted into the

Husson College Alumni Hall of Fame at a ceremony at the Bangor campus.

Read graduated from Husson College in 1970 with a degree in management and a concentration in finance. Presenter Arthur Comstock recognized Read for his “dedicated service” to his profession, his state and his community.

Comstock noted Read’s achievements in the banking industry, which has spanned more than 30 years; his service on the national board of directors of the American Heart Association; and his strong support for higher education.

Read and his wife, Penny, reside in Bar Harbor.

UMaine, Farmington

Paul England of Dedham has been named a Hometowner for the Ferraro Alumni Center at the University of Maine at Farmington.

The position involves writing short stories about students who are pursuing interesting activities or projects. The university sends the stories to the students’ hometown newspapers for publication.

England is from Dedham and is a senior English major, working on an undergraduate thesis. He graduated from Brewer High School in 1998.
