Fletcher leads Husson past Huskies in opener

GORHAM – Junior forward Randy Fletcher hit 11 of 14 shots for a game-high 26 points to go along with his 10 rebounds as he led Husson College to a 76-67 men’s basketball victory over the University of Southern Maine in Friday’s Hancock Lumber Maine Event tournament first round game.

The 1-0 Braves never trailed in the game as they shot 7-for-8 inside in the first half. Quinson Lancaster of Fairfield had 12 points, 10 rebounds and five assists while Ryan Rivera of Bradford scored 12. Presque Isle’s Scott Griffin chipped in with 11.

Freshman Ryan Garland of Hermon led the 0-1 Huskies with 16 points while Mike Francouer had 15 and Jason St. Pierre of Bangor had 12.

Husson shot 53 percent from the floor en route to a 38-26 halftime lead and 47 percent overall.

At Gorham, junior Kevin Crossman of Bath and senior Damien Strahorn combined for 45 points to lead the Colby White Mules in the first round of the Hancock Lumber Maine Event.

Trailing by seven points with under nine minutes to play, the White Mules, led by Strahorn’s seven consecutive points, went on an 8-0 run to gain the lead of the game as Crosman dropped in a free throw with 3:30 to go. A three-pointer by Strahorn made sure Colby held on to the win.

The Monks rallied in the final 10 minutes of the first half with a 33-9 run to take a 39-31 lead into the locker room at the half. Crossman had a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with his 24 points. Strahorn finished with 21 points. Sophomore Nick Loukes of Bangor added 10 points for the 1-0 Mules

C.J. Vose of Yarmouth led all scorers with 29 points for the 0-1 Monks.

At Farmington Friday, Corey Streams of Millinocket scored his 1,000th career point en route to a 20-point night to help lead the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners to the win over the University of Maine-Farmington in the first round of the High Chevy-Pontiac Tournament.

Lawrence of Fairfield graduate Jed Johnson had 14 points for the 1-0 Mariners.

Mike Ward led the 0-1 Beavers with 22 points while Skowhegan’s Matt Clement kicked in 16.

At Salem, Mass., Amanda Leavitt of Pittsfield and Kara Crockett of Glenburn scored 10 points apiece to lead the Huskies to the win in the first round of the Salem State Tip-Off Tournament.

Megan Cressler from Camden added nine points while Crockett blocked three shots and Jaime Zahm rejected seven UM-Farmington shots.

Rachel Bard of Winslow scored nine points and Katie LaHaye of Belfast grabbed 11 rebounds for the 0-1 Beavers.

Meghan Czismesia added 14 while Kim Thomson and Erika Forsberg added 12 each for the Owls. Courtney Clarke scored 11.

Erin Lovely tallied 14 and grabbed seven boards for the Terriers of Waterville, Maine. Thomas will play Westfield State in Saturday’s consolation game.
