MIAMI – The University of Texas-San Antonio rushed out to a 39-26 halftime lead and held off the University of Maine in the second half en route to a 73-56 men’s basketball win in the first round of the Florida International University Tip-Off Classic at Golden Panther Arena on Friday night.
The game was the season-opener for Texas-San Antonio, while the Black Bears dropped to 0-2. UMaine will face the loser of Saturday’s FIU-St. Peter’s matchup on Saturday.
Senior guard Devin Brown, a 6-foot-5, 205-pound guard, and classmate McEverett Powers, a 6-7, 220-pound forward, did most of the damage for the Roadrunners of the Southland Conference.
Powers tossed in a game-high 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds – including five on the offensive glass – to pace the Roadrunners.
Brown added another 20 points and 11 rebounds – eight of them offensive – in the win.
The Black Bears were led by junior Justin Rowe, a 7-foot transfer from Clearwater (Fla.) Christian College.
Rowe was a force down low, making nine of his 11 shots en route to 20 points in 31 minutes of action before fouling out of the game. He also ripped down 12 rebounds and blocked six Roadrunner shots.
Rowe has blocked 10 shots in two games.
UMaine also got a 15-point performance from senior Errick Greene, who made just four of 13 shots from the field but made six of seven from the line. Clayton Brown added 11 points and five rebounds despite playing just 25 minutes before he, too, fouled out. Starting guard Derrick Jackson scored just a point in the game, going 0-for-5 from the floor and committing six turnovers in 38 minutes.
The Bears did not present a formidable perimeter threat against UTSA, as UMaine made just two of nine attempts from beyond the 3-point arc.
The loss marked the first time in eight years that the Black Bears have started a season with two straight losses: During the 1993-94 season UMaine lost to Bradley and South Carolina State to open the year.
The Roadrunners also upended Maine in their only previous meeting, a 97-69 decision on Dec. 7, 1997, during a tournament at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo.
The Roadrunners outrebounded UMaine 42-33 in the game. In all, 19 of those rebounds came on the offensive glass. The Black Bears managed just eight offensive rebounds – four by Rowe.
The Bears made 42.6 percent of its attempts from the field to UTSA’s 40.6 percent, but the Roadrunners fired up 64 shots to UMaine’s 47.
The Black Bears connected on 50 percent (10 of 20) shots in the second half after shooting 37 percent in the opening period.
The Roadrunners shot 44.8 percent in the first half and 37.1 in the second.
