BANGOR – A local man was injured Sunday morning in a single-vehicle accident in the northbound lanes of Interstate 95, between the Union Street and Broadway exits, police said.

Jason Ouellette, 22, of Bangor was thrown an undetermined distance from his vehicle during the crash, according to Maine State Police Trooper Matt Grant.

Ouellette was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where information about his medical condition was unavailable, a nursing supervisor said late Sunday afternoon.

The accident occurred about 9:45 a.m., as Ouellette was traveling in the passing lane, according to Grant. After Ouellette’s 1988 Oldsmobile Ciera four-door sedan struck the median guardrail, it crossed both driving lanes, struck the guardrail on the opposite side and briefly became airborne before landing in a rocky ditch. After bouncing a distance, the vehicle rolled at least once before striking a wooden noise barrier and coming to rest on its wheels, Grant said.

Ouellette, who apparently was not wearing his seat belt, suffered extensive injuries in the accident, which remains under investigation by the state police and a Bangor Police Department accident reconstructionist.

Grant said that the Bangor Fire Department handled the rescue and that city police officers provided traffic control at the scene. The resulting lane closure delayed northbound traffic Sunday morning.
