TOWSON, Md. – Northeastern earned the America East volleyball title and captured an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament Sunday, topping Maine 30-27, 30-18, 30-21 in the league championship match.

Fourth-seeded Maine, making its first championship appearance in only its third season of varsity play, upset top-ranked Towson 30-23, 18-30, 32-30, 30-25 Saturday to advance to the title match.

Second-seeded Northeastern defeated No. 3 New Hampshire 30-19, 36-38, 30-23, 30-24 in the semi-finals.

Lindsay Wagner led the Huskies with 12 kills and 13 digs while Kristin Ursillo racked up 31 assists and four kills. Kristin Detherage added 11 kills while Gianina Pellegrini logged eight kills and nine digs.

Leah Voss paced Maine with 13 kills and seven assists while Carmen Gabriel chipped in with 11 kills and 13 digs.

Saturday, Voss registered 27 kills and 12 assists to help the Black Bears upset Towson. Her 27 kills was a new America East championship record, topping the mark of 26 set by Stephanie Szorc of Hartford in 1994.

It was the first time that the No. 1 seed has not advanced to the championship match since implementing a four-team single-elimination tournament in 1997.

Gabriel contributed to the Black Bear charge with 16 kills and 13 digs while Cheryl Elliot added 48 assists and 10 digs.

For Towson, Sarah Miller had 14 kills and 14 digs while Jordan Tomasek recorded 10 kills and 10 digs.

The America East All-Championship team included Voss, Melanie Madden of Towson, Alyson Coler of New Hampshire, Gabriel, Wagner, Pellegrini and Ursillo. Ursillo was named the Most Outstanding Player.

At Gorham Saturday, Quinson Lancaster sank a pair of free throws with nine seconds remaining Saturday to lift Husson College of Bangor past Colby of Waterville in the championship game of the Maine Event Tournament.

Lancaster finished with 16 points and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Nate Cyr paced the Braves with 17 points, Ryan Rivera logged 14 and Randy Fletcher and Scott Griffin contributed 12 apiece.

Women’s hockey

Niagara sweeps Maine

At Buffalo Sunday afternoon, Tania Pinelli made 43 saves and Stephanie Romain broke a 1-1 tie with 7:16 left in the second period as Niagara University’s women’s hockey team beat Maine 3-1 to complete a weekend sweep.

Niagara, now 9-1, won Saturday’s game 6-4.

Candice Ceelen opened the scoring in the first period but Meagan Aarts tied it on the power play early in the second period for 4-5-1 Maine. Candice Moxley added an insurance goal.

Valerie Hall had two assists for the Purple Eagles.

Amanda Cronin finished with 16 saves for Maine.

On Saturday, Moxley and Hall had two goals each as Niagara raced out to a 5-0 lead. Lindsay Vine and Teresa Marchese-Del Monte had the other Niagara goals while Jennifer Mascaro and Pinelli combined for 12 saves.

Jarin Sjogren, Cheryl White, Rebecca Ouellet and Aarts scored for Maine to pull the Bears within 5-4 before Marchese-Del Monte scored the clincher.

Dawn Froats made 29 saves for Maine.
