GORHAM – Quinson Lancaster sank a pair of free throws with nine seconds remaining Saturday to lift Husson College of Bangor to a 76-74 men’s basketball victory over Colby of Waterville in the championship game of the Maine Event Tournament.

Lancaster finished with 16 points and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Nate Cyr paced the Braves with 17 points, Ryan Rivera logged 14 and Randy Fletcher and Scott Griffin contributed 12 apiece.

Kevin Crosman led the White Mules with 16 points, Damien Strahorn notched 14 and Sean Flood added 11.

Women’s hockey

Niagara sweeps Maine women

At Buffalo Sunday afternoon, Tania Pinelli made 43 saves and Stephanie Romain broke a 1-1 tie with 7:16 left in the second period as Niagara University’s women’s hockey team beat Maine 3-1 to complete a weekend sweep.

Niagara, now 9-1, won Saturday’s game 6-4.

Candice Ceelen opened the scoring in the first period but Meagan Aarts tied it on the power play early in the second period for 4-5-1 Maine. Candice Moxley added an insurance goal.

Valerie Hall had two assists for the Purple Eagles.

Amanda Cronin finished with 16 saves for Maine.

On Saturday, Moxley and Hall had two goals each as Niagara raced out to a 5-0 lead. Lindsay Vine and Teresa Marchese-Del Monte had the other Niagara goals while Jennifer Mascaro and Pinelli combined for 12 saves.

Jarin Sjogren, Cheryl White, Rebecca Ouellet and Aarts scored for Maine to pull the Bears within 5-4 before Marchese-Del Monte scored the clincher.

Dawn Froats made 29 saves for Maine.
