PROSPECT – An accident that the Waldo County Sheriff’s Department is blaming on alcohol use and speed has put an Orland man in the hospital in serious condition.

The single-vehicle accident occurred at 7 p.m. Saturday on Route 174. The driver, Roger Demers, 22, of Orland, had to be taken by helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, the sheriff’s department reported, with “severe facial injuries.”

The passenger in the 1990 Subaru Loyale, Adam Ashmore, 22, of Orland, was taken by ambulance to Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast with minor injuries, according to Deputy Merl Reed’s report.

The sheriff’s department reconstructed the accident, Reed reported, and determined that speed and alcohol consumption were factors in the crash. Charges are expected to be filed against the driver, according to the report.

A spokeswoman at EMMC said Demers was still a patient at the hospital and was listed in serious condition on Sunday afternoon.

Rescue workers from Prospect, Stockton Springs and Searsport responded to the accident.
