A Frankfort man received minor injuries and an OUI charge Tuesday night after he rolled over his pickup truck on Route 1 in Winterport.

Laurence Redmond, 53, was headed south on Route 1 at 6:30 p.m. when he swerved onto the soft shoulder and traveled in the ditch for roughly 100 feet. Redmond struck the side of a driveway, sending the Chevy pickup truck airborne before landing in a second driveway, according to Maine State Trooper Stephen Hills.

The Winterport Ambulance crew removed Redmond from the truck’s crushed cab and he was later taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center where he was treated for minor injuries.

Route 1 was closed briefly while fire crews cleared glass from the roadway.

Upon talking with Redmond, Hills noticed the smell of alcohol and the man’s slurred speech. Redmond admitted that he had been drinking and that he thought he had fallen asleep while driving.

Redmond was later summoned on the OUI charge.

The pickup sustained extensive damage on the left side and front end and Hills said the vehicle was a total loss.

The Winterport Fire Department also responded to the accident.
