DOVER-FOXCROFT – Land is being cleared on Route 15 in Dover-Foxcroft for one of several new churches being constructed in the state by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
In addition to a new church in Dover-Foxcroft, the religious body with headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah, plans to construct new facilities next year in Yarmouth, Damariscotta and Newport. In addition, the organization has purchased buildings in Machias and Houlton, and is looking for land to build on in Winthrop and Saco, according to Jon Hanson, facilities manager for most of the denomination’s churches in Maine. Hanson said Wednesday that additions also are planned next year for churches in Augusta, Ellsworth and Belfast.
The Dover-Foxcroft church will be a one-story, 6,470 square foot building, according to a building permit filed with the Dover-Foxcroft Town Office. The project engineer is WBRC Architects/Engineers of Bangor and the contractor is Nickerson and O’Day of Brewer.
Jack Kelley, president of Nickerson and O’Day, said Wednesday that the foundation for the $1.5 million building will be installed this fall, weather permitting. Construction on the actual building would begin next spring. “The end result will be a very high quality building,” he said.
The building will be rectangular in nature with the assembly hall in the middle of the building and classrooms rimming the hall. The facade will be brick.
The new ward building in Dover-Foxcroft will have 36,000 square feet of paved parking, according to Kelley.
