While escorting an ambulance to Bangor on Saturday, a Brewer police officer spotted a car whose owners he knew had suspended driver’s licenses.
A few minutes later, with the aid of Bangor police Officer Steve Jordan, Brewer police Officer Fred Luce found the car pulling into a parking spot on Hancock Street. They approached the driver, James Violette, 24, of Bangor as he was getting out of his car and asked him about the status of his license. Violette denied having a suspended license and, according to the officers, became nervous when asked if he had any illegal substances on him.
He then fled on foot, but the officers caught Violette less than a block away. They reported finding a used needle and small amounts of marijuana in his pockets. A film can with clear fluid and a rolled-up dollar bill with a white powdery substance in the center were also confiscated and believed to contain drugs, said the report. A later search of the vehicle revealed two more used needles and minor amounts of marijuana.
Violette was arrested and taken to the Penobscot County Jail. He was charged with operating a vehicle with a suspended license, refusing to submit to arrest or detention, possession of scheduled drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana and falsifying physical evidence, according to a police report.
Roger Taylor, 22, of Kenduskeag was arrested in Bangor early Saturday and charged with driving under the influence. According to the report, police followed Taylor from the parking lot of a local nightclub. They said he drove into the oncoming traffic lane and over the median, then swerved onto Interstate 395 before nearly striking a guardrail on the entrance ramp to I-95.
Taylor told police he knew he should not have been driving, but denied drinking before leaving to take his two passengers home. Police said his blood-alcohol level was 0.18 percent. The legal limit is 0.08 percent.
Bangor police were called Saturday when witnesses reported seeing a man drag a woman down a First Street sidewalk while slapping her several times. John Eckert, 53, of Bangor told police that the woman was his girlfriend, that she had suffered a seizure and that was why she was on the ground. He claimed he was trying to help her. Both were intoxicated, said the police statement.
The report said Eckert threatened to attack police if they came near him or his girlfriend. After a brief struggle, he was arrested and taken to Penobscot County Jail. Eckert was charged with domestic assault and failure to submit to arrest.
An employee of Captain Nick’s seafood restaurant on Union Street in Bangor went on break after 9 p.m. Saturday and discovered a woman inside his car in the parking lot behind the building. The employee detained the woman and called police. Police Officer Daniel Herrick responded and arrested Mildred Preble, 39, of Brewer.
The employee said Preble had taken around $20 in change from the vehicle, which the employee reclaimed. Herrick said that Preble appeared to be intoxicated, and a container of what was believed to be liquor was recovered. Also recovered were numerous bullets for a .45-caliber gun, though no weapon was found. She was charged with burglary to a motor vehicle.
