Bangor

The second annual Holiday Festival of Lights Parade and tree lighting ceremony will be held 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, downtown.

The parade, produced by Rotary Club of Bangor, will begin at Railroad and Main streets, proceed down Main Street, along Central, and right on Harlow to Exchange Street. Adelphia is the corporate sponsor.

The city’s new holiday decorations have been installed in downtown Bangor. The decorations were purchased, in part, with contributions from businesses in the area.

Arthur Tilley Jr., a member of Bangor Noon Kiwanis, received the Irving R. Talberth Outstanding Club Secretary Award from the New England District of Kiwanis at the fall conference in North Conway, N.H.

He is club secretary of the Bangor Noon Kiwanis, as well as secretary of the New England District. Tilley was nominated by immediate Past Lt. Gov. Nancy Golding, Division 3, and was presented the award by immediate Past Gov. Marty Olsen.

The Bangor Noon Kiwanis Club raised $5,000 for the Children’s Miracle Network with its “Haunted Forest” project at Halloween.

S.W. Cole Engineering Inc. received the Grand Conceptor Award this month at the annual awards program of Consulting Engineers of Maine, a statewide professional organization based in Manchester.

The company was recognized for a project using air bladders to jack up a slab. The client was Superior Homes Corp.

Judges were John Hodgkins, professional engineer; Bill Brown, director of engineering for the Department of Environmental Protection; Cynthia Howard, president of the Maine Chapter of the American Institute of Architects; and Herbert Sargent, president of Associated Constructors of Maine.

The Penquis C.A.P. Resource Development Center received a Maine Roads to Quality Compass Award earlier this month at the second annual Maine Roads Recognition Celebration. The award is given to organizations or individuals that make a significant contribution to career pathways in child care and early education.

The program’s Resource Development Center provides Maine Roads to Quality training sessions to child care professionals, and is now implementing a pilot program to enter all Penquis Child Development teaching staff in the Maine Roads Registry.

Members in the registry have documented their training, experience and education, and have received tangible recognition for their professional achievements.

In addition, Eleanor Weisman, educational specialist for Penquis C.A.P.’s center, presented Tina Tremblay of Newport with a Maine Roads to Quality certificate for completing more than 45 hours of training. For information on the resource development center, call Weisman at 941-2840, Ext. 103.

Bradley

In honor of Veterans Day, the Bradley Post Office held a community tribute to veterans on Nov. 10.

The American Legion Post from Orono performed a solemn flag ceremony, and the Bradley Boy Scouts led participants in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Danny Delaware, a resident of Bradley and volunteer fireman, played taps on the trumpet. Jason Cook, a University of Maine student, sang the National Anthem and “It’s a Grand Old Flag.”

Bradley Postmaster Sue Molley hosted the event. Refreshments were served.

Brewer

The Brewer Eagles Club and Auxiliary contributed $500 to the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter to help that agency provide Thanksgiving for its clients.

Members held meat raffles, worked in the kitchen at bingo games, and conducted other activities to raise the money, which they decided should go to an agency that sometimes is overlooked during the holidays.

Lt. Gov. Herb Hopkins, Division 3, received a Distinguished Kiwanian pin from immediate Past Gov. Marty Olsen for the 2000-2001 year during the fall conference of the New England District of Kiwanis. Hopkins is a member of Brewer Kiwanis

Immediate Past President Bill Newberry of the Brewer Kiwanis Club was nominated for Lt. Gov.-elect for Division 3 of the New England District during the caucus held during the recent governor’s visit at Pilots Grill in Bangor.

Hampden

The Hampden Kiwanis Club will sponsor the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony 4-5:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, in the parking lot of the Hampden Town Office. There will be caroling, refreshments, and a visit by Santa Claus. For information, call 862-4500.

Old Town

Old Town Recreation will sponsor the annual Christmas tree lighting at 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at the corner of Water and North Main streets.

Carols will be led by Old Town High School Chorus and Leonard Middle School Chorus.

Old Town Girl Scout Troop 152 met Nov. 8, with members bringing bags of returnable bottles and cans. The group took them to Skeeter’s Redemption Center and received $58, which was divided into “shares” of $5.

The Junior and Senior Scouts then went to Bell’s IGA with a list of items to purchase, from turkeys to sweet potatoes. The girls delivered the items to Manna Inc. in Bangor. Scouts learned several lessons, from managing money and how a redemption center works, to how it felt to give of themselves.

Orrington

Orrington resident Carol Gentry graduated Nov. 17 with highest honors as a licensed massage therapist and shiatsu practitioner from the Downeast School of Massage in Waldoboro.

Coursework included anatomy, physiology, nutrition and ethics. Gentry also had additional training in shiatsu, a Japanese form of acupressure.

Gentry has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut and has worked as a teacher and director in schools and summer camps.

She is a board member for Goals 2000 in the Orrington School, and a member of the Massage Therapy Association.

Union 91 and Child Development Services of Penobscot County will sponsor a free developmental screening for 3- and 4-year-olds, as well as 5-year-olds not yet eligible for kindergarten, 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, at North Orrington Elementary School.
