Schools

Brewer High

Key Club President Kylie Gray and Secretary Jen Kee presented the program at the Brewer Kiwanis Club as part of National Key Club Week. The club also held a Thanksgiving food drive to assist Brewer Kiwanis in making baskets for Manna Inc. Brewer Kiwanis provided the turkeys.

Hermon High

As part of National Key Club Week, members of the Hermon Key Club ran the Bangor Breakfast Kiwanis meeting. Twenty-two Key Club members attended, including Katie Vashon, governor of New England Key Clubs. Hermon Key Club Adviser Chris Greene was presented a certificate for 12 years of service to the Key Club.

Mock Trials

Sixteen high schools are participating in the Maine State High School Mock Trial Competitions this week.

Hampden Academy, coached by Michelle Gross, and Mattanawcook Academy, coached by Donald Barker, will compete at 1 p.m. Nov. 29 in Penobscot County Superior Court. Justice Andrew Mead will preside.

State championships will be held in December. This year’s mock trial centers on an alleged date rape taking place on a fictional college campus.

Service academy nominees

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins has nominated the following area students to attend military service academies:

. James Belanger, Glenburn, U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

. Conrad Brown, Holden, U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

. Cynthia Dehm, Kenduskeag, U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis.

. Ryan Dunbar, Bangor, U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs.

. Paul Gillet, Orono, U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis.

. Donald Martin, Winterport, U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs.

. Christopher Patterson, Brewer, U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis.

Colleges

Norwich University

Two local students joined the Norwich University Corps of Cadets during a midnight ceremony Nov. 13 after three months of intensive mental and physical training.

Patrick D. Knaide is a criminal justice major from Bangor and a graduate of Bangor High School.

Joshua S. Frederik is a business administration and management major from Hermon and a graduate of Hermon High School.

Colleges

Trinity College

Sarah E. Mullen, daughter of James Mullen and Jayne Dyer of Bangor, has been named a President’s Fellow for the 2001-2002 academic year at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn.

A major in women’s studies, she will represent that department and meet regularly with other Fellows, as well as Acting President Ron Thomas, to discuss issues. Each fellowship is awarded by the faculty to the top student in each major. Mullen is a graduate of Bangor High School.

University of Georgia

Cady E. Berkel of Bangor, a graduate student at the University of Georgia in Athens, has been awarded the Thomas F. Comer Scholarship.

Berkel, who has an assistantship at the university, is the daughter of Mark Eggleton and Janet Berkel. She is a graduate of Bangor High School.
