George Washington defeats UM women Lamar hands UM men sixth straight loss

HOUSTON – The George Washington Colonials outscored the Maine Black Bears 33-22 in the second half Friday night en route to 59-47 women’s basketball victory in the first round of the Gene Hackerman Rice Invitational.

George Washington’s Cathy Joens led all scorers with 23 points, including 5-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Joens added nine rebounds in the winning effort.

Ugo Oha added 12 points and nine rebounds for the (2-2) Colonials.

Maine (2-3) was led by Julie Veilleux with 16 points. Heather Ernest contributed 15 points and nine rebounds for the Black Bears.

Shooting proved to be the difference as Maine’s field goal percentage dropped in the second half, down to 22.2 percent from the first half’s 33.3 percent. The Colonials, on the other hand, improved in the second half to 41.4 percent shooting compared to 34.6 percent in the first half.

Men’s basketball

Lamar 79, Maine 65

At East Lansing, Mich., six games into the season, the University of Maine men’s basketball team is still looking for its first win as the Lamar Cardinals downed the Black Bears at the Michigan State University Tournament.

Lamar raced out to a 37-24 halftime lead in a game they led from start to finish. Forward Damany Hendrix led the 2-2 Cardinals with 26 points. Tyler Hackstadt had 15 points while guard Eddie Robinson had 10 points and nine assists, and Terrell Petteway came off the bench for 10 points and eight rebounds.

Maine was led by center Justin Rowe, who was 7-for-8 from the floor for 18 points. Errick Greene chipped in with 16 points on 10-for-10 shooting from the line.

The Bears shot 17-for-18 from the foul line, were only outrebounded 42-39 and committed 12 turnovers – just one more than Lamar – but the Cardinals scored 19 second chance points off rebounds to Maine’s three and scored 10 more on the break while the Bears managed just two.

The closest margin in the second half was 11 points, just 57 seconds in, as the Bears shot 37 percent from the floor in the half and 33 percent overall while Lamar was 45 percent for the game.

Freshman forward Joe Campbell of Bangor hit two of three 3-pointers for eight total points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Maine will play Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne in today’s consolation at 6 p.m. Tourney host Michigan State University beat Fort Wayne 81-68 in the first game.

Freshman Chris Hill and Marcus Taylor each scored 16 points Friday night to lift No. 22 Michigan State to the victory.

Adam Wolfe added 13 points and Kelvin Torbert also had 12 for Michigan State (3-2), which extended the nation’s longest home-court winning streak to 47 games.

Jeremy King led IPFW (0-5) with 17 points and Nick Wise had 11.

Embry-Riddle 76, Husson 70

At Daytona Beach, the Embry-Riddle Eagles, ranked third in the NAIA Division II, were led by Lance Bartels’ first double-double of the season with 10 points and 13 rebounds to defeat the No. 21 ranked Husson Braves.

The Eagles outrebounded the Braves 54-26, including 19-8 on the offensive glass. Embry-Riddle also outshot Husson from beyond the arc, 12-8.

Robert Pilsbury came off the bench to lead all scorers with 32 points for Husson, including shooting 6-for-14 from 3-point range. Ryan Rivera added 13 points for the Braves, while Randy Fletcher contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds.

At Waterville, Damien Strahorn led the White Mules with 21 points and five assists, including three 3-pointers, as Colby extended a 14-point halftime lead to a 22-point victory.

Kevin Crosman added 16 points and six rebounds, while Nick Loukes scored nine points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out six assist for Colby.

Jed Johnson led the Mariners with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Corey Streams added 10 points and six rebounds.
