EAST LANSING, Mich. – Guard Errick Greene poured in 30 points on 13-of-17 shooting to lift Maine to its first win of the season, a 73-65 triumph over Indiana University at Purdue-Fort Wayne Saturday in the consolation game of the Coca-Cola Classic at Michigan State University.
The Black Bears led just 28-25 at the half, but outscored the Mastodons 22-13 over the first seven minutes of the second half to break the game open and gain their first win after sixth straight losses.
Greene scored 12 points and handed out two assists during that stretch.
Greene sparked the spurt with a layup just six seconds into the half, then fed Freddy Petkus for a 3-pointer 25 seconds later.
Ric Wyand countered with a basket for IPFW, but a Justin Rowe dunk and a steal and fast break lay-up by Greene pushed the Maine edge to 37-27.
Greene either scored or assisted on the Bears’ next 13 points, capping the rally with a transition lay-up.
The Mastodons didn’t get closer than seven points the rest of the way.
Center Rowe added 22 points and eight rebounds and Rickey White had 12 points and eight rebounds for the Bears. Maine outrebounded IPFW 42-33 and chalked up 42 points in the paint, compared to just 20 for the Mastodons.
