UMaine holds on for win Bears sink free throws in late going to defeat Spartans

HOUSTON – Maine converted six free throws in the final 28 seconds to hold off a determined University of North Carolina-Greensboro rally and earn a 62-59 women’s basketball win Saturday in the consolation game of the Gene Hackerman Rice Invitational Tournament.

The Spartans erased a 15-point second-half deficit and tied the game at 56 on a jumper by Jacinda Lambert with 1:15 remaining.

Kim Corbitt countered for the Bears, nailing a pair of free throws at the 27.7 mark to make it 58-56. Maine stole the ball on the Spartans’ next possession, and UNC-Greensboro fouled Melissa Heon with 11 seconds left.

Heon sank both free throws, but Lambert made a 3-pointer to make it 60-59 with 3.3 seconds to go. The Spartans fouled Heon again, and again she made both to put the game away.

Heon was 6-for-6 from the line and finished with 10 points. Maine connected on 85 percent (17-20) of its free throws, while the Spartans made just 55 percent (11-20) from the stripe.

Heather Ernest chipped in with 11 points and 10 rebounds, Tracy Guerrette added 11 points and Julie Veilleux and Corbitt netted nine each for the Bears.
