Transient charged in Nov. 9 death Case had been considered an accident, police say

BANGOR – A Bangor man was charged with manslaughter Tuesday after allegedly causing the death of a 40-year-old man, who reportedly fell from a second-floor balcony last month.

Bruce Mann, 43, remained in Penobscot County Jail on $50,000 cash bail after his Tuesday afternoon arrest in the Nov. 9 death of Jack Sears of Bangor.

Mann is scheduled to appear in 3rd District Court in Bangor today to face the felony manslaughter charge, which carries with it a maximum 40 years in prison.

Police say Mann, during an altercation, caused the blunt-force head trauma that ultimately killed Sears, who underwent head surgery at Eastern Maine Medical Center after reportedly falling over a railing at 217 Broadway to the first-floor entryway on Nov. 8.

Sears lived in the building, according to police. Mann, whom police called a transient, apparently stayed in the building on occasion.

Police were not revealing the exact circumstances of Sears’ death Tuesday evening, saying only that while they were sure Mann caused the fatal injury, they did not believe initial reports that Sears fell over the railing.

“We believe the injury was the result of an assault, not a fall,” Bangor Police Chief Donald Winslow said Tuesday.

There is no indication that a weapon was involved, police said.

Winslow said the two men knew one another.

Brewer Police arrested Mann in May after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend at a Brewer motel. Mann reportedly dumped noodles over his girlfriend’s head and began hitting her, according to police.

Police are continuing their investigation into Sears’ death.
