The Weekly marks its 10th anniversary

Dear Readers,

This week we mark the 10th anniversary of The Weekly.

While it’s only our sixth issue under the new format, we do want to acknowledge the hard work done on this newspaper since 1991, when it was founded by Northeast Publishing.

It is a privilege to be Greater Bangor’s weekly community news source, and we do appreciate the many comments we’ve heard – the positive and those that offer suggestions for improvement.

The Weekly is delivered to 49,000 homes, giving it the third-largest circulation of any Maine newspaper.

If you live in Bangor, Brewer, Orono, Old Town, Hampden, Hermon, Veazie, Glenburn, Eddington, Clifton, Winterport, Argyle, Alton, Holden, Dedham or Orrington, you should be receiving The Weekly – either in the Bangor Daily News or by mail.

Subscribers to the Bangor Daily News in Bradford, Bradley, Carmel, Costigan, Dixmont, Corinth, Etna, Frankfort, Greenfield, Hudson, Kenduskeag, Levant, Milford, Newburgh, Olamon and Stetson also receive The Weekly folded into their newspaper.

In both groups of communities, The Weekly also is inserted in Thursday’s edition of the Bangor Daily News sold in stores and on newsstands.

We know The Weekly is well-read.

Sports columnist Don Perryman is hearing from people who have comments about his

take on sometimes serious, sometimes humorous events in “Between the White Lines.”

Carol Higgins’ weekly “Senior Beat” column has prompted many calls to the Eastern Agency on Aging for information on services that can improve the lives of senior citizens.

Les Myers, director of Maine AIRS, which broadcasts local stories from the Bangor Daily News and other newspapers, is receiving a good response to the monthly column he is coordinating for The Iris Network, which serves the blind and visually impaired.

At the Bangor Humane Society, executive director Bev Uhlenhake is helping us all be aware of the needs of pets and our responsibilities when we own them – or they own us.

And we know you are watching our calendar for news of meetings of support groups and other activities that may help or interest you.

Thank you for sending in items for “Community News” and “School News.”

We’re hoping you’ll also let us know what’s happening with your senior citizen club, program or residential facility for seniors.

As with other news for The Weekly, you may e-mail us at weekly@bangordailynews.net, send items to The Weekly, P.O. Box 1329, Bangor 04402, or drop them off at the front desk of the Bangor Daily News, Buck Street entrance.

For information on advertising and classifieds, contact John Browning, David Warwick or Pam Farley at 942-2913.

We wish you happy holidays – and many blessings in the new year.
