ELLSWORTH – The Ellsworth Eagles played stifling man-to-man defense and converted some fast-break baskets to outscore the Hermon Hawks 19-4 in the fourth quarter for a 43-33 schoolgirl basketball victory in their opener Friday night.

Mallory Patten scored six of her 12 points in the fourth to lead the rally while Ashley Oleson scored all of her sixth in the fourth.

Sarah Silsby chipped in with eight points for the winners.

Shannon Dobbins paced Hermon with nine points and Jodi Reynolds netted eight.

Jared Sylvia tallied twice for Houlton-Hodgdon (0-1), and David Carmichael picked up the other. Chris Bither and Ben Carton had assists. Brandon Carmichael stopped 16 of the 21 shots he faced.

Colby Horne had 14 points and Chris Duval tossed in 12 for Belfast.
